Op shopping in Canberra?

lindt 28 August 2020 12

This weekend seems as good a time as any to go op shopping. I’ve never been op shopping in Canberra before, so can regulars give me a few tips on where to find treasure? I’ve heard that there are some Salvos stores in Mitchell and Phillip – are they any good?

Hi Lindt, I recommend Another Chance Op Shop in Scullin – it has been selling treasures to op shop customers for the last 20 years. It currently has a summer sale: 50% off ALL clothing until the end of February 2015!

I have volunteered here for the last ten years (so I’m not paid to say this) and I constantly hear customers say we are the cheapest in the Belconnen region. It’s located at Scullin shops, Ross Smith Crescent. It is open from 10am-4.30pm Monday to Friday, and 10am-1pm on Saturday.

Depends on if the local market sellers have raided the stores yet.
There are a few car boot sales people who are regularly at the large Fyshwick one, but have also seen the owner of the ’boutique’ second hand clothing market stall (gorman house, bus depot and store in fyshwick) haggling for a discount *gag*

I can’t help but finding it mildly amusing that Opshops sell second-hand grundies.

I thought we had already established that it is better to go direct to the source and steal the clothes from the donation bins…

I have always had good luck at the belco salvos, vinnies and y’s buys they are fairly close to each other too which is good. The salvos at jamison can also be pretty good.

C&G Auctions have deceased estates most Sundays- I have found them better for furniture and they often have some lux old things like hats and gloves. Depends on the estate. Check out the website http://www.candgauctions.com.au/

I think Queanbeyan has the best op shops.

Within a block of the corner of Crawford Street and Kings Highway, Queanbeyan there are 3 or four op-shops (Most on Kings Highay, one on Morisset Street). There’s also a Revolution CD secondhand “entertainment media” store too.

I walk through the double-fronted Sally’s store from time to time (the largest of the stores here). It mostly has clothes with some books, toys, vinyl discs and miscellaneous bric-a-brac.

You’re also possibly going to go near the main Sally’s store in Fyshwick too, so why not drop in there on the way to/back?

Both the Mitchell and Phillip Salvos are worth visiting. There’s also a smaller Vinnies in Phillip. But I have heard that the op shops in Gungahlin and Manuka/Kingston also get some treasures.

You should also check out the “I Op Therefore I Am” blog for maps and opening hours on all the op shops in the Canberra area:

If you scroll down there are entries for all the shops in Canberra and surrounds on the right hand side. I’ve gotten some excellent bargains in Canberra.

Depends on the kind of treasure you’re after.

Fyshwick Salvos is the biggest and best for clothes. They also have a bargain basement full of household items down the driveway and there’s plenty of treasure to be found there. Phillip is better for linen, curtains, blankets etc and not bad on clothes I guess.

If you go to Fyshwick, go the extra step to Queanbeyan and visit ‘the bargain hunter’ on the main street, fantastic for clothes, they even colour code their stock. Big store. Queanbeyan also has good Salvos and they’re within a short walk if each other.

Happy hunting!

The biggest one I know of is the Salvos in Fyshwick, near the markets.
