Many a spare room has a pile of hand-me-down clothes and accessories ready to be washed and donated. But what about the bits and pieces in that display cabinet, or the bag of baubles hidden under the stairs?
Where there’s a will, there’s a way, and there are plenty of paths to take for those odd items you didn’t know you could donate.
Vinnies Phillip shop manager Kathy Morris believes the more unique an item is, the more joy it can bring.
“I’m an art lover, so the best ‘wow factor’ finds for me are creative works that tell a story,” she says.
“Homemade clothing, costumes and dress-ups can absolutely be a form of art, and you can also donate ceramics, paintings, and other art pieces, as long as they’re in good, clean condition.”
Back in 2017, a vintage epergne (pronounced ie-purn) table centrepiece came into Kathy’s store. Around 60 cm tall and crafted from hand-blown cranberry glass, the item is vividly remembered by Kathy to this day.
“It was in immaculate condition and a beautiful example of Victorian style. I had never seen anything like it,” she says.
“Falling down a research wormhole, I learned it would have been a showcase of luxury in its day.
“A full set of fortune telling cups and saucers, circa 1900s, also struck me as a real treat to behold. I’m always surprised at how much vintage silver we get, such beautiful vanity sets, with date stamps in sterling hallmarks as early as 1756!”
Also in the creative donation category are books, statuettes, pots and pans, and non-electrical appliances such as antique kettles, irons or toaster tongs.
“We love quirky treasures and antiques,” Kathy says.
“Some of our stores cannot accept large, heavy items though, so it’s best to call your local Vinnies to check.”
This goes for any furniture – most stores won’t have room for couches, dining tables, beds or armchairs, but some will take side tables, storage baskets and small shelves.
Vinnies will now accept working electrical and electronic goods up to the size of a microwave.
Any bigger items are best dropped off to Goodies Junction, at Mitchell Resource Management Centre or Mugga Lane Resource Management Centre.
Unused candles and diffusers, faux plants, throw pillows, and legal CDs, DVDs and records often end up in landfill if family members don’t grab them first. Why not send decluttered items to the local thrift shop instead?
This also applies to sanitary items, haircare, skincare and general toiletries. If they’re unopened and in date, Vinnies will take them (finally, a good use for that extra manicure set). These items are donated to those in need via Vinnies Night Patrol vans.
Suitcases, travel bags and other luggage are of great use; just give them a wipe and make sure all the zippers work.
For the seasonal cleaners, downsizers and sudden empty nesters, op shops are a great place to pass on stuffed toys, puzzles, board games, blankets (no feather or down filling) and all manner of linen.
Kathy offers a few things to consider for when you’re getting ready to donate.
“Make sure any clothing or linen is washed and free of stains, rips or fraying fabric,” she says.
“Remember we can’t take toys or games that are broken or missing parts. Nobody wants to get to the end of their puzzle and find they can’t finish it!”
A good rule of thumb to remember – if it’s good enough to gift to a family member or friend, it’s good enough for Vinnies.
