When I first met my (English) husband, he thought it would be fun to read Bill Bryson’s Down Under to understand his Aussie girlfriend a bit better. I have since come to understand that Bill Bryson captures a hilarious take on his voyages around various continents, unless it’s your home. His thoughts on Canberra were far than complimentary – I seem to recall he discussed his socks more than any actual adventures. In fairness, he stayed at the Rex hotel and wandered down Northbourne looking for life.
That being said, I was VERY excited (enough to put it in capitals) to see that our very own Australian War Memorial was voted the number one ‘Travellers Choice’ by that website of travel insight, TripAdvisor. This is above the Sydney Opera House. Not only that, but it has ranked 17 in world landmarks.
OK, so it’s based on a complicated formula rating quantity and quality of reviews and opinions, which could possibly question the ranking being the truest interpretation of opinion but I’m going to go with it.
Take that to all those Australian travel guidebooks, which fail to even mention Canberra.
We are the Capital and we are awesome!
