A 23-year-old Oxley man has been arrested and charged with possessing suspected child sexual abuse material.

The man was also charged with using a carriage service to view child abuse material following an investigation by officers from ACT Policing’s Child Sex Offender Registry Team.

After obtaining a search warrant, police officers raided the man’s house at Oxley on 29 February and allegedly found a substantial amount of child sexual abuse material on the man’s mobile phone.

An ACT Policing spokesperson said the investigation began on 6 February when they received a referral from the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation relating to the distribution of suspected child sexual abuse material via social media.

The man is scheduled to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court today (2 March).

ACT Policing said members of the public who have any information about people involved in the possession or sharing of child exploitation material are urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

People can also make a report online via the Report Abuse link on the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation website.
