Parkwood fire preventable says Coe

parkwood fire

While the West Belconnen garbage fire smoulders on the Liberals’ Alistair Coe is pointing the finger of blame at the Gallagher Government:

Todays fire at Parkwood in Belconnen is another example of a potential hazard that was forewarned but ignored by the ACT Labor government, according to Shadow Minister for Urban Services, Alistair Coe.

This issue has been raised with me several times by people working in the area, and I have raised it repeatedly with the government to get them to take action and allay the concerns of people who could see the potential for disaster, but could see no action from the government.

Just like the GDE, just like Hawker Shops, this is yet another example of this government simply not listening to the people with the experience, the expertise and local knowledge. How many times do we have to put up with delays or disasters before this government will start listening to warnings? said Mr Coe.

So on the one hand the Libs want the govt to cut red tape, reduce costs and stop interfering with businesses and let the private sector get on with creating jobs

and on the other….the govt should interfere with business and create bureaucracy and red tape and increase the cost to business.

Where is the line drawn? Roughly around about the opportunity for a good press release I reckon.

Thanks JB. Looks like Coe raised valid concerns. It will be interesting to see the Govt response to his QON in light of the fire (pardon the pun).

That entire “industrial area” is a tinderbox and has been for years. Gopher Coe is grandstanding as usual, but if concerns had been raised directly with the Government then something should have been done to improve the situation by now.

Was there any more information in Coe’s media release to substantiate issues raised, or is it just empty rhetoric?

Sorry, link now there to the media release.

If only there had been some precedent in regards to warnings of potential fire hazards and subsequent blazes, that the government could have learnt from….
