The SMH has the news about Canberra company Pestat and their cane toad euthanising spray which offers and end to the queensland tradition of taking to toads with a 9 iron.

With chloro-xylene as the active ingredient (what’s used in dettol hand wash) it makes one think about chemicals around the house.

So, if you can overcome the simple problem of refrigerating Kakadu and the wet tropics without harming any native wildlife, the rest is easy?

I have a cunning plan.

We wait for the next ice age and don’t tell the toads.

brilliant!

It must work. I haven’t been able to find any cane toads in Canberra at all.

How do we know it won’t just mutate them, Godzilla style?

Is it chloroxylene or chloroxylenol?

If you look as the MSDS info on the Pestat website the active ingredient is chloroxylenol.

Put the toads in a bag and pop them in the freezer. They hibernate and never wake up.

Painless and easy.

So they put dettol in an aerosol and are now flogging it at Bunnings for $20 a can???

making a perfect shot with a old driver.

exactly, a driver is more the club – like, who’d try to chip the things with a nine iron? 😉

this spray sounds the biscuit – good on the inventors…

As a kid growing up in QLD, I quickly learned what household chemicals worked on toads. The salt on the back trick didn’t work at all, Dettol was reasonably effective, but straight liquid chlorine was the quickest and easiest. We had a pool, so it was always available. Not pleasant for the toad though as it dissolves their skin.

As alluded to by JB though, the most fun was had in practicing ones swing (unless you were fortunate enough to have BB gun). A quick tap on the head makes them puff up to double their size and lift their chin, making a perfect shot with a old driver.
