Power station #2 rumbles into gear

By johnboy - 23 January 2009 23

The Canberra Times reports that ACTEW has started buying up the land for their as yet unapproved power station near Williamsdale.

At a proposed 500MW this is a much bigger beast than the 210MW data centre jobbie which has caused so much trouble near Macarthur.

West Belco next?

What’s Your opinion?

Well golly. They’ve got a map with a vague reference to something being “most polluted”! I’m convinced.

From Digga’s web site:
“Our image is created by Dr Chris Klootwjik who … holds shares in geothermal energy companies and resides in Macarthur.”

So that’s what the Nimby’s call an independent assessment.

Anyhow, someone in today’s Canberra Times was complaining that a power station shouldn’t be on the Williamsdale site because it was too close to the Murrumbidgee River and it might pollute it.

Let’s not forget that ActewAGL meantime have withdrawn from the Canberra Technology City – the now infamous data centre with gas-fired power station on-site.l

Technical Real Estate are still claiming ActewAGL as one of its partners

Down with power and stuff! To the barricades!

Any and all environmental\social\health\hours of sunlight impact is bad, because it will affect their houseprices\children’s ego resilience\panoramic views\erode their roof tiles\fail to comply with whatever bullshit they believe today, so _everybody must lose_.

And don’t forget the ‘fumes’ from the power station will also stain curtins too!

If we’re all going to be driving electric cars in the future, plus running our ever increasing supply of airconditioners, we will need to supplement power grid capacity. Why not simply build one near here that we can use to reduce transmission losses? Ultimately, environmental impacts need to be calculated and managed – surely we can do that here also?

I love that pollution map on your website Digga.

“Most Polluted” to “Least Polluted”. Thats gold.

But back on topic, this thread is for the Williamsdale power station and i’m waiting for

CPR to throw all their resources against this proposal. Likely? Dont think so.

johnboy 11:33 am 23 Jan 09

Coal fired jobs somewhere else? Or gas fired jobs here?

Seems sensible really.

Digga 11:28 am 23 Jan 09

I’ve got nothing to do with Macarthur?

Why’s Canberra so happy for gas-fired power?

Skidbladnir 11:14 am 23 Jan 09

Those same Macarthur residents who were so vocally worried about the health of other people before (remember the plume that was going to blanket all of South Canberra?)…

Are they going to come out screaming again?

School Holidays?

I didnt know school children would be so vehement in their opposition to this.

I think most people have been back at work for the last couple of weeks.

You’ve had plenty of time to get your objections in.

Now for Power Station II : The Battle of Williamsdale.

Look at that, a posting even vaguely about data centre and out come the NIMBYs.

The new Development Application in Tuggeranong/Hume (DA 200813657) on ACTPLA’s site must have comments by 3rd February:
http://apps.actpla.act.gov.au/pubnote/pubnoteDetail_new.asp?DA_no=200813657

What were they thinking – advertising the DA during school holidays again? Stuff the community eh? They’re all down the coast boosting local tourism.

They’ve closed their website: http://www.canberratechnologycity.com.au/

What a farce! Get your objections in. Don’t let them spread this pollution when they’ve “moved” it just 1km and still near residential suburbs:
