Recommendations for framing?

Hi all,

Need a bit of help – have recently come back from overseas where I bought some paintings, which I now need to get custom framed.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a decent framer in Canberra, and approximate cost?

Would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

We’ve just started travelling to Mittagong and Frame Today has been great so I’d highly reccomend. You can find them here https://www.frametoday.com.au/picture-framing-southern-highlands

Framing Doctor in Tuggeranong. I had left myself a literal last minute framing job for Christmas and they were able to help me with a same day delivery of superb quality, competitive prices, a wide range of choices, and friendly and helpful staff. Everywhere else in Canberra had turn around times of a month or more.

I tried Framing Master in Fyshwick based on some comments here, but can’t recommend them. They offer little in the way of customer service or advice and hardly engaged with me. Secondly they said I can collect any time next weekend but when I went on Saturday they said it hadn’t been done yet, and the timeframe written on the job was Sunday. Thirdly when I picked them up, one of the frames had rough corners with sawtooth edges and looked shoddy. Given it is a 50 min round trip am contemplating whether it is worth going back and dealing with them again. If you want cheap prices go there, but if you want a good job and great customer service nothing beats Civic Proframe (which is the only place I will go to from now on).

Framing Master Fyshwick – search & read Framing Master Google reviews and you would not go anywhere else.

Services they offer:
Quality Art
Art Prints
Instant Framing
Needle Work
Cut Size Mirrors
Sporting memorabilia

Framing Master in Fyshwick, reasonable prices and they do excellent job as well as same day service or very quick turn around.

my parents use Framing Matters in Manuka and they do really amazing work, but very high end (ie. very expensive!) If you have seriously valuable artworks you should probably go there. I take my stuff down to Proframe on Akuna St, Civic, more my price range, still very good quality , great service and really really fast turnarounds, i’ve never had to wait more than two weeks, once I dropped a piece in on a saturday for custom framing and got a call on Monday afternoon to say its ready!!

Framing matters are good at what they do, but they are very pricey

THE FRAMERS next to Aarwun gallery in gold creek is a great little business. The prices are reasonable and the design and quality of their framing is second to none. They framed some valuable prints for me last year and gave me some great advice about conservation. I was very happy with the result.

i used to take all my stuff to the lovely old couple that used to operate up top of Lonsdale street, near debacle, but they went and retired on me!! Lately though I’ve discovered the Canlab/Civic Proframe place on Akuna street, (never even knew it was there until we left the transit bar late one night and were blown away by the cool stuff they have hanging in the window). Now i take all my stuff there! they are fun and creative with a great sense of style (the younger two there), probably mid range on price, more expensive than your backyard boys or the discount qynbn mob, but the quality is top notch so seems like great value to me (and I like framers that aren’t snobby), about the same as I was paying up in Braddon years ago.

If you want inexpensive framing go to the Old Bus Depot Markets on Sundays.

Best framer I have experienced is ‘The Framers’ at Goldcreek. Really good value for money, nice staff and professional work. Have had numerous pics and photos done there and will be going back.

Not sure I’d trust Civic ProFrame with my work, their website has a rather obvious bit of (potential) copyright infringement. (Top right, women with the blue shirt)

Thanks for pointing that out, we’ve contacted the web design firm that produced our site and we are assured that any stock images utilised on the website have been purchased and the thumbnail you’re referring to will be replaced with the proper version, it should have been replaced after the draft was approved before publication but was overlooked.

Rest assured we take copyright issues very seriously at Canlab and Civic Proframe, in our role as an agent for the bica prolab we routinely turn away people who wish to reproduce other people’s work without authority.

i vote Civic Proframe on Akuna St (near the YHA) as well. They really make it an art, I took a bunch of animation cells, a couple of gig posters, and an old Japanese woodblock print down there. Not THE cheapest, but definitely the best value, and the best service, everything looks amazing. The mouldings and mat colours and shaped cuts they did for the animation pieces were awesome and not something I could of come up with on my own

I love Civic Proframe – they do a lot of government work and were very helpful to me a few years back when I needed something done at absolutely no notice (eg I turned up in their shop with something that needed framing for a charity event the next day) and did a great job.

But for absolute passion I can’t go past Framing Matters. Not cheap, not quick, but the standard of finish, attention to detail and desire to turn whatever you bring them into a work of art is outstanding. I went there with a bunch of stuff to be framed. Cathy spent more than two hours with me picking out frames, mats, and secondary mats, plus the type of glass.

Nothing of what I brought in was of any great monetary value but I now have some stunning wall art. And Cathy was kind enough to express regret when I picked them up, saying she had the perfect wall at home for them.

I have used these guys once. And once only. They charge like a wounded bull, and their framing is average at best.

I wholeheartedly concur

better bet in Civic for my money is Civic Proframe down on Akuna St, especially if you want something a little bit more creative, great service and quick turnarounds. They also have some wickedly cool stuff in their little gallery corner http://www.canlabproframe.com.au

I like Framing Matters in Manuka. Great customer service, and they have won a stack of awards for their Framing efforts.

Seconded. My go-to guys for important things.

What’s their turnaround time like?

You won’t be able to get anything framed this side of Christmas, but normally a week or two.

Thanks goosepig.

Thanks for all the recommendations everyone! Canberra City Framing is just down the road from work so might duck in there today, and at least will have a starting point for when I call some of the others – although might skip the ACT Police ;P

They aren’t in Canberra, but I’ve been using http://www.frameshop.com.au lately. Very good prices, you can either send them your artwork and they’ll frame it, or make the frames up and you can put things in them. I’ve used them to frame photos, a watercolour on paper and stretch a canvas and have been very happy with them. They’ll also happily do stuff that isn’t on their website if you get in touch with them.

Locally I’ve used Hang Ups and the exhibition centre, both in Fyshwick and have been happy with the product, but they are both expensive.

I get Annette across from the Jamison Centre in Macquarie to do my framing. Bit of a character, fair prices & high-quality work.

Try the ACT police – they framed Winchester and a few others !

Bang! I wanted to make the same gag, haha!

To be constructive, I’ve used the framers attached to Aarwun Gallery in Gungahlin and was happy with the outcome. And a friend has just used Hang Ups in Fyshwick with good results as well.

I’ve only used one framer in Canberra once and that was Canberra City Framing as mentioned in a previous response. Cost me $350 to get a huuuuuuuuuge map framed. Very good job they did too. I’d go back there.

We have had Bill Mitchell of ‘Just Picture This’ http://www.canberrapictureframers.com.au/index.html
do the framing of many paintings for us and he does a brilliant job. I highly recommend giving him a call to discuss what you would like.

Best framer is in Civic. Canberra City Framing Gallery. They are a picture framer and gallery, owner is an artist and knows his stuff. 39 London Circuit, Canberra ACT 2601. Very reasonable prices.

I’ve always gone to Buvelot Framers in Colbee Court, Phillip. They’ve always done an excellent job, but they’re a little pricey. Worth it though.

Try the ACT police – they framed Winchester and a few others !
