Reconciliation place gets more rocks

By johnboy - 5 July 2006 8

The Minister for Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Mal Brough, put out a media release this morning announcing that more “stone artworks” (rocks) had been added to Reconciliation Place this morning.

“The stones, from Wilcannia, have engraved quotes about reconciliation from five eminent Indigenous Australians – Wenton Rubunja, Robert Lee, Ruby Hammond, Bill Neidjie and Gatjil Djerrkura.”

Unlike previous efforts at Reconciliation Place this one doesn’t seem to have upset anyone and when I went downt ehre to take a photo there were significant numbers of pleased looking indigenous folk around.

And I have to say I think it looks better than the contrived chunks of perspex and steel that dot reconciliation place at the moment.

The art on the rocks looks really good. That area needs some stuff like that. And the paddock (which once was a nice lawn) could do with a LOT less of the “tent embassy”.

Of course they were smiling.

They are going to claim them back in 20 years.

The ‘stolen’ rocks will be ‘returned’ with a big welcome home ceremony entirely funded by either the local taxpayer or the federal taxpayer.

Yippee.

The barra rock painting looks awesome as well, even if its not quite traditional crosshatch style.

Abundantly appropriate and nice to boot.

While they;re at it, could they dump a couple of truckloads of rubble on the Tent Embassy, please?

I met Bill Neidjie in Arnhemland around 15 years ago … amazing guy. He died about three years ago I think – a bit of a surprise to see his name so soon after his death.
