If you’ve been following the unexpected rise of the sea shanty in internet circles over the past few months, you’ll be happy to know that Canberra’s very own shanty club – Canberra Shanty Club – is about to reconvene. The club meets regularly at the Old Canberra Inn and is gearing up for their first meeting of the year. The friendly environment of the meet-up is a great way for shy singers to get involved belting out a few sing-along favourites.

Reverend Bones launches his new single ‘Tycoon’ this Saturday with a set at the Polish White Eagle Club in Turner. Inspired by the singer-songwriter’s teenage crisis of faith, the track is Bones’ first musical offering of the new year. He’ll be accompanied on the night by his excellently named backing band The Exvangelicals, whose ranks include a number of the city’s best and brightest musicians.

Former Hottest 100 winners Ocean Alley return to Canberra this week for two huge nights at the Canberra Theatre Centre. It’s certainly a welcome sight to have big-name acts back on the touring circuit and the band’s laid-back funk tunes are an ideal fit for those of us still easing our way back into gigs.
