Canberrans should brace for traffic delays and congestion on public transport as the Spilt Milk festival kicks off again this weekend.

The festival will be held on Saturday (25 November) at Exhibition Park from 11 am to 11 pm, with traffic management arrangements to be in place throughout the weekend, along with changes to bus and light rail services.

The road closures will be:

  • Flemington Road, between Sandford Street and the Federal Highway, from 9 am on Saturday (25 November) to 1 am on Sunday (26 November)
  • Federal Highway, between Antill Street and Barton Highway, from 7 pm on Saturday (25 November) to 1 am on Sunday (26 November).

The closures will apply to all regular traffic, with motorists urged to find alternative routes where possible.

Large crowds heading to and from the festival at EPIC are expected on light rail services throughout the day, with a special event timetable in place.

Services will be more frequent from 11 am to 6 pm on Saturday, and from 9 pm to 1:30 am on Sunday.

Light rail services will not stop at Swinden Street, Phillip Avenue or Sandford Street from 9 pm until the last service.

From about 10:30 pm, additional light rail services will also operate to manage the pedestrian flow from departing crowds by only operating from EPIC and Racecourse to Alinga Street before looping back to pick up more passengers.

Passengers departing northbound from Alinga Street have been asked to check passenger information displays and PA announcements regarding operating services.

Bus route 18 will be diverted due to the road closures and will not service Bimberi on Saturday.

Free event shuttle buses (coordinated by festival organisers through CDC) will be available to and from the event, with pickup locations at Belconnen and City Interchanges between 11 am and 5 pm, dropping off at EPIC.

Return shuttles will operate only from EPIC to the City interchange from 8 pm. Event attendees can then continue their journey using regular Transport Canberra bus services.

All other bus services travelling to Gungahlin, and from Gungahlin to the City will still be serviced.

The EPIC Park and Ride facility will be closed from 7 am on Friday (24 November) until 7 pm on Sunday, with motorists asked to use the nearby facility at Well Station Drive.

Event attendees can also travel for free on any Transport Canberra bus or light rail service on the event day. If requested, attendees need to present their ticket to the Transport Canberra bus driver or CMET Customer Service Officer.

More information on road closures can be found by calling Access Canberra on 13 22 81. Information on transport options is available from Transport Canberra on 13 17 10.

The government says that the Federal Highway will be closed between “Antill Street” and the Barton Highway. It needs to clarify whether it means the 1 km between Antill St Dickson and the Barton Highway, or the 3 km between Antill St Watson and the Federal Highway.

The planned rabbit cull should be held in conjunction with this drug-fest masquerading as a music festival.

Closing the Federal Highway for a music festival seems ridiculous.

Did the government not learn from last year? 10’s of thousands of intoxicated people were forced down the main road to get to the city since the tram and buses could not accommodate them. If only we had a stage close to the city in which we could host a music festival… oh wait we do….
