As fresh snow buckets down on the Snowy Mountain ski resorts, a severe weather warning’s been issued for large parts of the ACT and southeast NSW.
The Bureau of Meteorology has warned a “vigorous cold front” will sweep across the region today (12 June) bringing strong northwest to westerly winds.
“Strong winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h, with damaging wind gusts to around 90 km/h, are likely for parts of the Snowy Mountains district and southern parts of the ACT,” a statement read.
“Areas further east over parts of the Southern Tablelands and inland of areas of the South Coast, the Illawarra and the Southern Highlands may see gusts reach up to 100 km/h this morning.”

The winds are expected to ease over Alpine areas during the morning but may continue over the remaining areas captured by the warning until the afternoon.
Locations that could be impacted include Thredbo, Jindabyne, Nowra, Katoomba, Mount Ginini, Bowral, Braidwood, Bombala, Adaminaby and Nimmitabel.
The State Emergency Service advises in these weather conditions that people should:
- Move vehicles under cover or away from trees
- Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony
- Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences
- Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall
- Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill
- Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires.
