Bust out the brollies, Canberra! The BoM is forecasting thunderstorms this afternoon. Photo: Bureau of Meteorology.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the ACT and nearby areas, saying storms are likely to produce large hailstones, damaging winds and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding over the next several hours.

Areas that may be affected include Braidwood, Canberra, Cooma, Queanbeyan, Bredbo and Nimmitabel.

The thunderstorms are being generated by an unstable airmass and an upper wave combining with a surface convergence zone.

The next warning is due to be issued by 6:45 pm.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

  • Move vehicles under cover or away from trees
  • Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony
  • Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences
  • Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093), as shown on your power bill
  • Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall
  • Keep clear of creeks and storm drains
  • Don’t walk, ride your bike or drive through floodwater
  • If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue
  • Be aware that run-off from rainfall in fire-affected areas may behave differently and be more rapid. It may also contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks
  • After bushfires, heavy rain and the loss of foliage can make the ground soft and heavy, leading to a greater chance of landslides
  • Unplug computers and appliances
  • Avoid using the phone during the storm
  • Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well
  • Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires
  • For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500.

The storm the BOM predicted seems to be over my house right now. I hope the wind doesn’t knock the power out, I won’t be able to read all of these….clever…comments.

We had one branch come down…no biggy, I moved the car…thanks BoM.

Hope there are a few heroes here going to park their V8 out in the street to own the libs this afternoon.

If the BoM says it’s going to rain, I ignore. If it says fine days ahead, I pack an umbrella

Whilst weather forecast is unlikely to ever be 100% accurate the BoM is quite accurate despite these sorts of puerile comments which appear to be about casting doubt on science.

Science has long left the building as far as the BoM goes

See what I mean about puerile comments for which there is no basis in fact or reality.

I’m sorry, your comments are on a pedestal of accuracy and authenticity. You are the world’s most famous fact checker, never getting anything wrong /sarc

Somebody has the vax-brain-blues. Don’t worry Seano, we were all lied to. The sciences in Australia are a laughing stock.

@Futureproof my comments aren’t on any pedestal, they’re just not peppered with banal & inanely partisan stupidity…unlike some.

@Stubbed Toe
Lol “Somebody has the vax-brain-blues. Don’t worry Seano, we were all lied to”…. well then should be easy to prove….without sounding like a complete fool. lol. Good luck with that.

@Futureproof
“If the BoM says it’s going to rain, I ignore.”
So I guess you are currently sitting in a deck chair, sucking on a cold brew and enjoying the sunshine now (5:15pm – Wed 15-Jan), Fp.

Enjoy *face palm*

JS, I don’t drink, but I do have a deck chair. BTW, I have the BoM app on my phone. I was continually getting notifications of severe thunderstorms, then cancellations, then a new notification, then cancellations. Sounds like a guess to me. Anyway, I’ll sit on my deckchair after I mow the lawn, because last night the BoM said it was going to rain for most of the day. Today’s prediction – 10% chance of rain, which means a coin toss

You have a ten-sided coin? Or not a clue about probability?

I’ll go with the latter.

Mowed the lawn, sat in the chair enjoyed the sun, looking at the screenshot from the BoM from yesterday’s forecast of rain today and the next few days….let me check now…no rain for the next seven days. Damn, that means I won’t be able to go on a bike ride on Saturday because it will probably be raining. That chocolate wheel at the BoM must be worn out from landing on the ? all the time

I hear you! A swift look out the window works for me!

The first warning you see on the BOM weather map is the disclaimer which says “this site is not secure”.
There were some intense storm cells evident yesterday but non penetrated the Canberra bubble.

Not a drop. BOM gets it wrong again. If they can’t get their alamist forecast right for 24 hours, how accurate are their future predictions?

Understanding short and long term statistical modelling is not your forte, is it Acton. But you comment anyway.

Wetting my finger and sticking it up in the air serves me better than BoM forecasts

Your declarations of ignorance are impressively forthright, Futureproof, although I cannot deny that you will know your finger is wet.
