Calling all greyhound and sighthound owners: the Great Global Greyhound Walk is on again this weekend, and all greyhounds and sighthounds are invited to participate. This walk is happening all over the globe on the same day, including in Canberra. It’s free and starts near Questacon on Sunday, 25 September, at 10 am, and will last about an hour.

Leaving from the car park behind the International Flag display, the walk takes in part of the Parliamentary Triangle, stopping outside Parliament House for a group happy (or yappy) snap.

Registrations for the Great Global Greyhound Walk are not necessary, just turn up on the day ready to set off with your hound or hounds and be part of this annual global movement. Last year, 7,509 sighthounds walked around the globe across 343 walks in 27 countries.

The last Canberra-based Great Global Greyhound Walk saw 131 Greyhounds, five Italian greyhounds, four whippets and one Saluki take part.

This year, organisers are hoping more local sighthounds join the fun.

The Great Global Greyhound Walk aims to celebrate greyhounds, to raise awareness and promote them as great pets after their training and racing days are over. Greyhounds are wonderful companions, love human company, walk nicely on the lead and, contrary to popular belief, don’t require much exercise – just a 20-minute walk a day, although many can enjoy much more.

At this year’s event, bandanas will be available for sale, with monies raised going to local rescue groups for rehoming costs.

All dogs must be on lead for the event (no retractable leads).

For more information about adopting a greyhound, contact any of these groups: Greyhound Rescue, Friends of the Hound, Greyhound Connections, Rescued Greyhounds NSW Central Coast and Homeward Bound Hounds.

An event not to be missed. It won’t end the racing industry, however it will show people that greyhounds do amazing pets and a lot of people care about them.
