Sky Light Canberra. Time lapsed images of Canberra

GCNelson has put this gorgeous up onto Vimeo with this note:

That’s the trouble with time lapses. You need time.

This is 8 months of my spare time gone. But it was a worthwhile experience.

What began as a request from science program ‘Catalyst’ morphed into a series of experiments with techniques, software and cameras in an effort to bring Canberra’s sky to life.

Approximately 30000 Raw photos, several cameras, 2 hard drives, 900GB of data and a little old Macbook that punched way above its processing weight and rendered it’s heart out, albeit frustratingly slowly. This is the result.

5050 still frames processed and combined.

Many time lapse lessons learnt but many more to go. Lots of room to improve, refine and enhance but, above all, a reminder that Canberra is a vibrant space and beautiful city.

I hope you enjoy it.

Many thanks to Greg for pointing us at it!

As I said previously, very impressive work, but I should ask, why did you choose to shoot in RAW? The only advantage I can think of when dealing with this many images is to preserve colour depth (14bit vs 8bit)?

It offers better control for processing images, particularly shifts in white balance from day to night.
JPEG images are heavily compressed in camera and don’t offer the same latitude.

The music sounds like something by Ludvico Enaudi, who is it?

Coldplay – Clocks.

Yes. A heavily modified instrumental Sessions version.

Thanks very much for sharing, that is beautiful!!

Software used?

Intervals between images?

…and what camera was used? A GoPro or a camcorder?

The majority were shot on a Canon 5D but I also used a Pentax K10 and GoPro 2.

Thanks.
Mostly Lightroom and Final Cut Pro
The shot intervals were usually between 2 and 5 seconds depending on the time of day and the pace of the clouds.

Lovely stuff, and if you look closely you’ll see Grace and Jimmy, and even more closely, a reflection of Hitch catching a bus.

I particularly liked the brilliant sky footage at the beginning and the very end and what’s more not a Skywhale to be seen anywhere!

Brilliant!

Great work, a lot of skill involved too by the looks.

Awesome! Nice choice of music too!
