St John Ambulance in the ACT?

nanzan 2 February 2009 8

Connected to the thread about the demise of the Children’s Bicycle Education Centre, is a question I have about St John Ambulance in the ACT.

The Belconnen division of St John Ambulance used to meet and train at the said bike ed centre in Belconnen; presumably they have now made other arrangements, or has the Belconnen division folded? (Many voluntary organisations, like St John Ambulance, have struggled in Australia in recent years, and I wonder how they are doing here in the nation’s capital?)

Does anyone know about the Belconnen St John Ambulance division, or St John’s other divisions in Canberra? Do they have premises of their own, or do they simply rent spaces?

When I lived in Victoria, St John Ambulance seemed to have quite a high profile there, with their own vehicles and halls etc. However, I don’t see St John having the same profile here in Canberra, apart from its national headquarters building in Forrest.

Thanks for that. Are there any photos out there of the new Merc Sprinter, I wonder?

Also, I have noticed that St John has moved its national headquarters from a wonderful building and location in Canberra Avenue in Forrest, to inside the Realm Hotel in Barton! What’s happened to precipitate that, I wonder? And what is going to happen to the old HQ? Talk about a prime piece of real estate…looks like St John Ambulance is in need of some money, perhaps?

Yeah unfortunatly St John ins’t as big in the ACT as it is in victoria. In the ACT St John Operations Branch (the Black and White volunteers you see at events) do have 3 vehicles. 1 X Toyota Hilux, 1 X Merc Sprinter(Newly donated by ACT Ambulance) and 1 X some sort of older model van which is also set up sort of like an ambulance.
I hope this answers your questions!

Thanks for that…but I still don’t remember seeing any in the years I have lived in Canberra, except for a trailer-come-first aid post. I haven’t seen any vehicles decked out in St John Ambulance livery…as the SES has for theirs.

Are there any photos out there of any such St John Ambulance vehicles in Canberra – there are none on the St John (ACT) web site.

St John’s (vollies) do have there organisation vehicles; including cars/vans/utes and caravans/campers. The SES often works closely with them, so we see them a fair bit, but they are about for the general public to see too.

Thanks for that.

The vehicles I was thinking of, though, are the ones used by St John Ambulance’s first aid volunteers at public duties – mobile first aid posts, or ambulances, if you like.

In Victoria, every St John Ambulance division (branch) in most country towns and suburbs had at least one (sometimes they were former ambulance service ambulances), but I never see these in Canberra.

I just wondered why?

Are there any St John Ambulance volunteers out there who can enlighten us?

From a friend who is a St Johnnie:

The Belconnen Division now meet in the Lake Ginninderra Sea Scouts building, off Beissel St.

Does anyone know about the Belconnen St John Ambulance division, or St John’s other divisions in Canberra? Do they have premises of their own, or do they simply rent spaces?
Both. There are Divisions meeting in the St John ACT building in Deakin (adults on Wednesday evenings and Friday middays, cadets on Friday evenings). There is another adult division that meets in Gilmore (Tuesday evenings) and a cadet division in Wanniassa (from memory, on Wednesdays).
