Storm pictures in the distance

By johnboy 22 January 2013 5

Canberra’s storm watchers had a field day last night with distant clouds.

Photo by Richard Tuffin (@RichardTuffin) sent in the above shot, and Martyo the one below:

Peter sent in a set taken from Lake Tuggeranong looking towards Bonython.

Greg has managed some great gets of the lightning:

Here’s the full slideshow and we’ll add more as we get them.

Don’t worry, rain’s on the way. the monsoon’s finally started, giving the heave to that giant bubble of too-hot air over australia, and next week should see the start of some pretty convincing wetness.

Very cool. Be nice if we had some rain to go with it.

We could see the cloud while walking the dog in Giralang last night. IIRC, the BOM radar indicated that the storm was down between Bredbo and Cooma, so something like 60km or so from Tuggeranong. It was one of those nasty little high speed round units with a black centre, indicating localised but very heavy precipitation. I was glad I didn’t have a front row seat.
