Strange looking government building in Bruce?

Just wondering if anyone knows what the government building in Bruce is for? It is on Battye Street, behind a big fence, with video cameras allover the place. There is no indication of what goes on inside, but there are signs all over the place say it is Commonwealth land and no trespassing etc.

Any ideas?

[ED – is this it?]

That building is an old ATO datacenter which was staffed mostly by HP and EDS employees. I think they were slowly moving out, and I eventually think it will be sold to a developer to build apartments.

You will find that the Verizon DC is the smaller one behind this one, on Braybrook Street. They have a big sign at the front gate, and it says Verizon.

Absolutely correct. They’ll be out by mid 2011.

I’ve wondered this for years! I used to swim at the AIS and puzzle over it with a family member. A few years later they were in a governmen department of some sort and there was a map of land owners or something and it showed that land being owned by the ATO, so I agree with those who say the ATO unless it’s changed.

Always wonder about the people who live in these industrial areas. A data center is a building that has aircon chillers running hard 24/7. Not hugely noisy but I’d find it irritating.

I can also imagine a summer power outage. Grid under load from heat + air conditioners + maybe storms/fires and something trips. All the flats have no aircon so will need their windows open with two buildings worth of big diesel generators running just meters away.

Tony is correct.
Year 2000 when ATO IT was outsourced, EDS moved your tax records to Sydney and was then it was half empty then 2 years later another department who shared it with ATO move their stuff across to the Verizon one. The other building closer to AIS which built the same era was owned by customs. Verizon owns it with 2 large department housing their data centre.

Not very discreet if people keep asking what it is, eh?

Aaah a CIA plant to fool us all. We’re not fooled “Tony”, we know where the chemtrails come from, and the truth will come out, even if it takes a hundred conspiracy theorists…

Amusingly, the ATO sold the building years ago and leased it back, as per the wasteful fashion of the time.

The new owner has jacked up the rents so high the ATO is in the process of relocating to a new data centre.

Anybody in business knows that you
– buy stuff that appreciates (eg property)
– lease stuff that depreciates (eg cars and computers)

And yet the stupid bloody public service:
– leases its buildings
– buys its computers

NO! NO! NO! you are all wrong. They wan’t you to think it is the A.T.O but it is the exit/entry for the tunnel that goes to Parliment House.

Have to add it to the list… shhh

“What happens at the ATO data centre? Is it just a big collection of computers?”

A data centre is pretty much that – a place where a large number of servers sit and process data. It could host a range of servers, like web servers, or SAP servers, or Citrix servers…

Most likely, being the ATO, it’ll be the servers that calculate our Tax returns each year, among others.

What happens in the ATO data centre, stays in the ATO data centre.

It has been there for yonks, 20 years or more. In my taxi driving days I took a guy, on a Sunday, from Kambah to there, waited while he rebooted the great god computer and then took him home again. Good fare, my normal Sunday takings all in one hit 🙂

be that as it may, the building houses Verizon.

No it dosen’t. This is the ATO one.

The real purpose of any datacenter is, of course, to keep diesel mechanics employed.

As for what datacenters are really for – the SAP applications you use at work are usually hosted on a box sitting under the sysadmins desk. The datacenter is just for show, so the rest of the world can believe that you’re a “serious” outfit – after all, running a datacenter usually means you’re employing a couple of full time diesel mechanics. Usually the floorspace is 110% sublet out to other people who aren’t clued in enough to run SAP and SAAS on a box under the desk. Income generation from capital assets, folks.

And did I mention the job creation for diesel mechanics?

I think you will find it is actually Verizon who host most govt websites

There are multiple organisations that host government websites, including Verizon, Telstra, Unisys, Optus, CSC, HP, IBM, Hostworks, etc.

A data centre is not just a place that host websites, to grossly simplify it, they operate as server rooms in a remote location. Chances are that if you are at work (in the federal public service & many SME & Corporates) many of the applications (eg. SAP) that you use reside on physical servers in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane.

Well at least we can satisfy the OP in agreeing that it does not contain UFOs and dissected aliens.

Well well well the CIA has conned you all hasn’t it? Data Centre phooey! It’s just a ‘smokescreen’ for its real purpose. The data was all moved out to Dickson, Deakin and Lyneham several years ago in fake furniture removal vans. This buliding is now being used to manufacture the chemtrails that the CIA is seeding the world with in a bid to counter the creeping rise of global warming awareness.

The truth is there people, and to think they manufacture this stuff right here in the ACT. What’s the guvmnt doing about that then, eh?

For the people who have identified them as ATO and Verizon DC please provide your name, number, and home address.

We will be sending some MIB to do some eye test.

I worked there some time ago, thats how I know that it is ATO

And why do you want to know what is there? I might have to call the Terrorist hotline on you 😛

What happens is a big collection of computers sit there in racks or pods processing data. In fact, the best DCs are “lights out” – they strive to minimise people visiting onsite. It’s really nothing exiciting to see, unless you just love rackmounted metal/plastic boxes with a few blinkenlights (which some of us do.)

If like shiny computer rooms, the IPA boys are truly anal about theirs – customised colour-coded racks and all.

It looks like some sort of data center to me.

Can confirm Verizon, an aquaintance works out there.

I worked there about 6 years ago. As the first commenter stated, this is the ATO data centre, there is another one diagonally behind it which is the Verizon data centre. I recently heard that the ATO one is getting decommissioned and redeveloped in to something else, not sure how true this is though.

Everything old is new again – this building has been a feature of RA discussions before. Prepare for the crazies again.

Its definately a datacentre. been in there a few times. There is another sort of behind it. Its not defence though, their datacentres are in defence buildings and not outsourced.

Ditto for data centre. Not just the ATO, several departments.
