Stupid, stupid people and their stupid cigarette butts

By deezagood 4 December 2009 75

So on the way to work on Wednesday morning, the Monaro was at a bit of a crawl. I noticed not one, not two, but three people throwing their cigarette butts out of their car windows during this journey (two people from the same car). The ACT is a tinder-box – I can’t fathom how people think it is okay to throw lit butts into the grass on the side of the road under any circumstance – but especially when everything is so dry. But that’s okay – used my trusty camera to take photos of their rego plates (when the traffic was completely stopped of course) and I will be reporting them to the police. They will cop a fine, and will have to pay the said fine, or I will be very happy to testify to their transgressions in court. I will feel much better about the world.

If you see people littering, please – take down their rego, time and place of the offence and report them. You’ll feel so much better.

What’s Your opinion?

I can’t wait for the new stronger anti-smoking ban to be in… I’ve got a medical ‘thing’ at the moment that makes being near cigarette smoke more dangerous than usual, so I’ve paid a lot more attention to how many smokers are out and about.

I can’t believe how many inconsiderate smokers are out there, crowding around entries/exits, or ruining a perfectly good outside meal!

Inconsiderate smokers? We have a right to be in public just as much as you do. If you don’t like it, go elsewhere where there is no smoking. There are plenty of restaurants now that don’t allow it. Ridiculous. It’s not illegal.

Around food it is. And for good reason.

Just used the form at; http://www.nobutts.com.au/file/1271 to report a passenger in a car who threw a lit butt out of the window, right in front on me, as I was coming into work on my motorbike this morning, the f**k*ng m*r*n. Thanks for the link deezagood!

I think the news laws that are coming are rediculas, the government are taking this too far!

I memorised the number plate of a person that threw a cig butt out the window yesterday into the grass but reading the report form makes me paranoid that I will end up in court for it. Cameras along that area would prove they were there at the time. To dob or not???????

Okay, so I asked an AFP friend about this; apparently they do issue fines based on the ‘dobbing’ (if you want to call it that – I prefer ‘civic duty’ myself); and the vast majority of people tnd to just pay the fine without taking it further. Maybe they feel embarrassed? Either way, if ‘dobbing’ stops these idiots from doing this again (even if they don’t pay the fine), and perhaps starting a bushfire – then I consider it worth it. The other good news is that you can do the same thing when you see people hurling bottles onto the footpath (where they smash and cut up dog’s feet) and other forms of littering. Dirty filthy scumbags – I question how these filthy creatures have been brought up, I really do.

Yeah, I wondered the same thing. On a 39 deg day with strong winds, is it worth dobbing in the driver of the green falcon, rego ZD500 for flicking his ciggie out the window? Probably not so I won’t

I’ve just bought a pair of motorcross type motorbike boots, they have steel tips on the front edges of the sole.

The next person who throws a butt out of the window when I am riding behind them, which happens so fecking often, I will follow until they stop, and kick their lights out.

As an ex motor cycle rider, I have had ciggy butts in the face and clothes and been the recipient of other tin-top detritus. Being on two wheels you notice things that most motorists don’t and it’s amazing the inconsiderate things some motorists do, so much so that I swore that I would carry a pair of side cutters in my pocket – then when the traffic stopped for traffic lights or whatever, I could calmly get off my bike, and snip the valve stems off all four wheels. Lovely… I feel better now just visualising it. 🙂
However, I never did get around to it (sigh…)

Reporting them to the police is a gutlessly violent thing to do.

Yep. have to say that’s one of the more incongruous statements I’ve read lately. You want someone to stop in traffic and get out of their car and confront someone with some lame statement, otherwise they’re committing an act of violence by reporting it? And what happens if the tosser tells you to eff off? What gutsy non-violent thing do you then?

Yeah, so is reporting domestic violence going on next door, and so is reporting drug dealing in your street ……. What a stupid thing to say. This crap of “it’s a dog act to dob in people” is garbage. Some people really need a reality check !!!!

And what the hell is “gutlessly violent” anyways ????

If you have evidence, why NOT report them?

*If* you have evidence (that can actually be used in court) and *if* you are willing to make a statement and possibly appear in court, then go for gold.

indigoid 8:34 am 12 Dec 09

Would video evidence of the deed suffice, do you think? 🙂

I have a camera mount on my bike now. Starting and stopping the camera is easy enough. Often there is sufficient warning of butt flickage to close the visor and press the record button.

I’m not sure why these clowns deserve any mercy or sympathy. If you have evidence, why NOT report them?

I have a suggestion for the smokers who, for whatever reason, throw their cigarette butts out the car window; use a soft drink bottle instead. You can keep in it the car with a little bit of liquid in it, put your lit cigarette butts in it, put the top back on and give it a little shake if you need to. It keeps butts, smoke and smell safely locked inside, no more stinky ashtray or threat of fire. When the bottle gets too disgusting, throw it in the bin and get another.

+1 It’s what I do. Were not all ignorant, but I am happy to wear the stereotype. It’s part of being a smoker.

I do however while no endorsing violence towards general smokers, a push to beat senseless with wifflebats those who spit gum on foot paths.

raise awareness about butts, fag butt fires…………….this thread is great!
