Summernats to keep on rocking at EPIC

By johnboy - 24 July 2009 73

To the joy of some, and the disappointment of others, the ABC informs us that Summernats is going nowhere.

The new owners of the Summernats Car Festival say the event will be staged in Canberra for at least the next three years.

A company led by Andy Lopez who produces the Australia Day Concert has bought the event from Chic Henry.

Mr Lopez says the consortium has signed a three year lease with Exhibition Park with the hope to extend the event beyond 2012.

Chic Henry is staying on as a consultant, which is to be expected when buying such a complicated beast.

UPDATE: Liberal Senator Gary Humphries is concerned that three more years will not be enough!

Senator Gary Humphries has urged that the event stay in the ACT saying that “It is absolutely essential that a family-friendly Summernats stays here in the ACT.

“This event brings lots of people to the Nation’s Capital every year and is a big stimulant for our local economy, with local hotels, restaurants and retail being flooded for the weekend every year.

“It has been well supported by the local motor enthusiasts, and our local community as a whole and it is vital that such a centrepiece of the annual calendar doesn’t move elsewhere.

I think that to say it is supported by “our local community as a whole” might be gilding the lily somewhat.

What’s Your opinion?

I knew Chic in the early 1990s and Summernats was a client for a while. I have always thought he was a remarkable man, very friendly, unpretentious and passionate. As an entrepreneur it is right that Chic should have been paid well towards the end of a 20 year venture. A fundamental rule of finance is that the investor must be paid to take on risk.

In any other city Summernats would be warmly welcomed and even those not into streetcars would generally acknowledge the right for those who did to have a festival of blowers, burnouts and boobs.

The way so many Canberrans have despised this event says a lot about the city’s intolerance. I find it ironic though that many of these same people would see themselves as civil libertarians in relation to a whole range of other subjects.

An abundance of cultural puritans/snobs may also explain why the city (almost 100 years old) is still so limited in is cultural offerings, why it struggles to attract tourist and why the rest of Australia still sees the place as a bland company town, thought of only as a place for politics and bureaucrats, when it is thought about at all.

What a pity they aren’t going away! Summernats gives the completely wrong message to the male 18 – 25 drivers who keep killing themselves. Some say it is only natural selection, but unfortunately their crashes often have collateral damage.

I’m all for the nats love it and I’m happy to see new owners,I’m looking forward to what they do with the event now. No I don’t agree with the young and old I guess male Idiots that chant TITS, TITS, and TITS. For the record I’m female and have been attending the nats for approx 18 years as a preteen throught to adult,I am a female victim, I’ve been groped, pulled out of cars, off the back of utes been chanted at and some times worst…. but always keep my clothes on, for me I think it’s those small group of females who whip there tits out that have ruined for all females DON”T drink your self stupid and give these little minded BOYS anything tell them to go buy a dirty mag and get there cheap thrills. This is a two sided fight girls keep your clothes on and little boys well you’ll never change them I think.

Oh well I’m sure if you rung them up and told them that you don’t approve and according to you it is so last Century, they’ll quickly come to their senses and shut it down. They probably just hadn’t realized your opinion on the matter.

Realised is spelt with an ‘s’ outside of the USA

Fantastic contribution. You’ve earnt yourself some doughnuts for all that detective work.

Dr Karl, you’re quite the nut case.

Tire Burnout smoke is a very toxic cancerous hazard. The EPA should stop the tire burnouts for that reason alone.

It’s hard to find something that is not a toxic cancerous hazard. Why not just go the whole hog and ban petrol completely as well? In fact, let’s ban EVERYTHING, and unban them one by one as they are proven not to be a toxic cancerous hazard, and also they pass your personal approval and taste test.

A R rating should be put on exposed female breast, Now its no longer a family event.

Reeks a lot like inequality for somebody so PC such as yourself. Males are allowed to go topless but females not, you say? This seems like more of a last century attitude to me.

Carbon emission offset tax should be paid by exhibitors of the event.

That would be a great idea. All carbon emitters should be made to pay for the harmful externalities they cause. The best way to apply this tax to cars is to tax the fuel.

The whole event is so last Century anyway.

Toughen up ANT….It’ll be a long time before Summer Nats leaves the ACT.

If you call 3 years a long time then yes, because that’s how long its going to last with the new buyer
