Long, balmy summer days and vibrant cocktails are the perfect pair. Here are our picks for a refreshing drink to enjoy in the Canberra sun.
For a drink and panoramic views of the city, head to The Howling Moon, Canberra’s first rooftop bar. Located on level 6 of the Canberra Rex Hotel on Northbourne Avenue, the bar has floor-to-ceiling windows and a glass-topped ceiling to enjoy the sweeping vistas from any table.
Book ahead and time your visit just before sunset and watch day turn to night with the aptly named Sunset Spritz. It is a bright summery aperitif with Aperol, Tanqueray gin, prosecco and pink grapefruit soda garnished with a blood orange twist.
With a view this good, chances are you will want to stay beyond just one drink, so there is a bar menu to tempt tastebuds. Share a round of mushroom arancini, buttermilk chicken wings, quail ‘lollipops’ and barbecue pork buns while you ponder your next cocktail.
The Howling Moon is located at the Canberra Rex Hotel at 150 Northbourne Ave, Braddon.
The Strawberry Mojito at Fenway Public House is the perfect summer spin on a classic drink. The refreshing concoction of sugar, mint, rum and lime is made even sweeter with strawberries.
The pub is named after Fenway Park, one of America’s most loved baseball parks, known for its unrivalled atmosphere. Since opening in 2019, Fenway has been working hard to follow in those footsteps, revitalising Woden and bringing new life and community to its Bradley Street location.
As you sip your cocktail, look out for the subtle nods to their namesakes’ nickname, ‘The Green Monster’. Lush jungle-plants and a little tongue-in-cheek representation of the nickname presents itself in the form of an eye-catching mural of Frankenstein.
Fenway Public House is located at Bradley Street at Westfield Woden.
Gin and Tonic
Canberra’s most flamboyant alcohol brand, Unicorn Spirits, has been producing shimmery colour-changing liqueurs since 2018. The neon range includes tropical-flavoured gin and vodka varieties to which they have recently added their first wine.
For a cocktail hour at home, turn the classic G & T into a vibrant colour-changing creation using Unicorn Elixir Tropical Gin Liqueur. The liqueur is infused with organic Butterfly Pea Flower, which gives it a vibrant blue colour. The colour is a natural pH indicator, interacting and changing colours depending on what you mix it with. Into a glass, pour in one-part gin, squeeze in a whole lemon and top with two parts tonic and watch the drink change colour before your eyes.
