The ACT Emergency Services Agency (ESA) today announced a temporary road closure as part of the construction of the new South Tuggeranong Fire & Rescue station.

“The building of the new emergency services facility on the corner of Drakeford Drive and Tharwa Road is at an advanced stage and is on schedule to be completed in March 2015,” ESA Commissioner Dominic Lane said.

Tharwa Drive, from its roundabout intersection with Drakeford Drive through to Mentone View, will be closed between the 5th and 26th of January 2015 to facilitate the installation of a new sewer main pipe to be connected to the new South Tuggeranong Fire & Rescue station.

“The construction team are confident of completing the works by mid-January however additional time for the work to be done because of the potential for bad weather and/or issues with the road excavation,” Commissioner Lane said.

“The ESA and Roads ACT suggest local residents, business operators and workers plan any road travel in that area with consideration given to the potential for traffic congestion and delays, particularly during traditional periods of peak traffic,” he said.

“The works have been intentionally scheduled at this very quiet time of year to cause the least amount of disruption to the community.

The ACT Government appreciates the community’s understanding and patience with any delays the road works may cause,” he concluded.

The ACT Government allocated $17.360m in the 2013/14 Budget for the construction of a new Fire & Rescue station in South Tuggeranong, as the next major step in rolling out the ESA Station Relocation and Upgrade Strategy to improve emergency response coverage across the Territory.
