The Bus Driver collection

Barcham 2 July 2013 21

Rioter regular thebusdriver has stepped up to the plate today and delivered an impressive collection of media for you to enjoy.

So enjoy.

Cars and sunsets!

Taken on the Parkway about 2 weeks ago on that night when it poured down in Civic. The camera was a hands free dash cam that I take with me on bus runs. I have given up on setting the date because it resets every time I unplug it to move it from bus to bus. The GPS and speed never did work.

Watch the cyclist on the right. This is why some cyclists get no respect from drivers.

Keep an eye on the drivers at the left. This is why some drivers get no respect from cyclists.

Running a red light on a major highway.

Some drivers will do crazy stuff just to overtake a bus. I had to slow down for this idiot.

Nothing really wrong in the last video except the driver should maybe of been in the left lane earlier if they knew they were going to turn there rather than dart across from far lane at the last minute.

Really? Don’t think so. Even if the other car was in the left lane you shouldn’t be over taking on the exit. So if in the left lane he/she should have come in behind the bus.

Indeed, and many car drivers underestimate the braking distance of heavy vehicles – the space in front of them wasn’t being kept for you to fill, it was their braking distance.

Incidentally I just got back from Ireland. Spent a few days in England and Scotland on motorways and A-roads, and my what a lot of cops and speed cameras they have. And Highways Officers in cars that look like cop cars – don’t know what their powers are, but the sight of them slows you down. Nonetheless, people in the UK have completely stopped using their indicators for lane changing. I know it is still possible to use them because I did.

This would be easier to swallow if I didn’t see buses every day of the week driving like a#%e hats on Canberra roads. For a professional drivers they aren’t concerned about running red lights, speeding, parking illegally etc. passengers or no passengers.

Indeed, but buses are easy to report. Just get the rego number and the time and report them using the Action feedback section. This year I have done that 3 times, the most recent of which is where an empty bus in the left hand lane of the Commonwealth Ave bridge over Parkes Way, Woden bound cut in front of me, missing me by around half a metre, but to do so had to cross the solid white line that separates the left lane from the traffic coming from City Hill. There was no good reason for it either, it wasn’t like he was avoiding something in the lane he was in, my guess is the centre lane was running freer and he wanted to get back to the depot to finish the shift.

To the motorcyclists griping about drivers, do you understand how much you scare the s*** out of us when you take off at maximum speed from every set of lights on Wentworth Avenue, then wobble as you start to lose control because you’ve gone from zero to 100 in three seconds in a 70 zone, and we just blindly hope you’re able to stay upright and not end up under the wheels of the poor little Polo?

Every minority group has it’s idiots, and yes, there are some real diks on high powered motorbikes. But they’re a very small minority and I promise you, they either stop the stupidity or give up bikes pretty quickly, because no one rides with them, except their other dik mates.

That said, I’m certainly one for moving up the middle and taking off before the cars do, and Im almost 50, ride a middle weight Suzuki twin and have been riding most of my adult life. I dont intend to scare anyone, just get out of their way. We all know that some people are just a little too precious, especially in Canberra.

I think the lesson here is that everybody is a terrible driver and none of us should be let on the roads.

Give it to pedestrians, we can all fight over the sidewalk.

No,everybody except me and i’d be more than happy to have the roads all to myself.Besides how hilarious would it be watching the chaos on the footpaths with the pedestrians and cyclists 🙂

But will they have to pay rego to use the roads? 😉

This! Every time I see/hear bus drivers bitching on about drivers not respecting them it makes my blood boil. Buses are the reason I got a dash cam. Its as if the ACTION drivers course leaves drivers worse off than when the went in. For example, the intertown bus last night leaving Woden. Sure there is a bus lane to cross Hindmarsh Dr, but it doesn’t mean you must use it especially when the driver then insisted on cutting into the middle of a solid stream of traffic.

So to bus drivers I say, you want respect? Show other road users some in return!

You’d be surprised at the number of cyclists using helmet or handlebar cameras now.

And to the knob who drives a new red ute with the black and white number plate “For Play” – maybe you should have your mind on driving more than other things…. You drove like a complete numpty on Monday trying to turn left from Adelaide Ave (northbound) down onto Hopetoun Circuit. And you almost killed me in the process…..

Completely agree since getting my bike L’s. The drivers get worse, because they see L’s and think i’m going to do something stupid and the fact i’m on a Vespa they assume i can’t do the speed limit.
I had a lady overtake me on a roundabout the other night in the wet…. on a single lane roundabout…

I’m thinking of mounting my gopro and recording some of this crap, to see if the police will do anything about it. I’m not one to complain about speeding a little over the limit, but seriously some of the crap I’ve seen lately is just plain dangerous.

That’s crazy stuff Watto. Being overtaken on a single lane round about. Stick to the middle of the lane and don’t give them an oppertunity to do stupid things.
Yes on the Go Pro. The more people realise this stuff makes it on to the Internet the more they will think twice about doing it.
I have not worked out where / how to report this stuff yet. Any suggestions anyone?

You guys should ride a pushbike on the road. Car drivers think its their god given right to push past you in a single lane whether there is room or not…….& they wonder why we get cranky.

Possibly the one thing I do well is give L’s extra space, as you say, you might do something stupid.

I’ve seen too many scooter and step-through riders staying further left than I’m likely to on a bicycle.
YOU are under no obligation to stay left. Use that to help them not kill you.
Also beware side streets to the left, close to the curb may be outside the arc of where they are looking.

I ride a motorcycle every day. 25 ks each direction from Belco to Parkes. Been doing the same road for 6 years. I see this driving and much worse every day.

Someone once said that untrained drivers (like most of Canberra) fear anything thats bigger and disrespect anything thats smaller. I have to agree.

And a word of advice if I may. If a bike is coming towards you, and you think that you can turn in front into a different lane and therefore avoid a crash, please think of the poor bike rider who doesnt know what your thinking, all we know is some dik has just blindly turned in front of us and emergency action is the only option. Its a very horrible feeling knowing someone has seen you and turned in front anyway. Seriously, try it sometime.
And if you were the blonde in the 4wd that did that to me in front of the civic police station yesterday afternoon, you deserved far far more than that withering stare. I was just too bust trying to breathe again to tell you what you really needed to hear.

Dead right, Terra. Currently sitting at home bored out of my brain, nursing a badly broken leg for another 3 months or so, because a clown in a 4WD “didn’t see me” on a big cruiser and t-boned me.

We share the road with these people…

That’s precisely the type of thing I see every day, without fail, and maybe once in a blue moon you’ll actually see a cop on the road, but it’s a rarity..
