Triple J Unearthed have announced that Hancock Basement have won the Trackside Competition.

If you’re wondering what the fuss is about you can hear them in a long ago Insatiable Banalities podcast or this Saturday night supporting Skipping Girl Vinegar at the ANU Bar.

totally agree erin_86.

given your resistance to my unyeilding cynicism, i won’t retract my staements but i’ll admit that to push my point further would show a lack respect to musos i’ve been watching for many years – my point was not to detract from their accolades.

p.s. I think winning this unearthed competition is about a lot more than just playing Trackside. Even if the band has played there before, as an unsigned band triple J has given them media and radio exposure they have never experienced previously. So go the ‘Cock!

Go the ‘Cock!!! An absolutely awesome band, and seriously, not hard on the eyes either.
Well done guys!! See you at Trackside!

my point exactly – they deserve something real.

Not detracting from the band, they rock… I just don’t really see how they’re being “Unearthed” after playing last year’s event.

Here’s the thing that confuses me:

Hancock Basement were on the lineup for Trackside last year.. This year they weren’t, they enter a competition and they get in?

Yay for ‘competition’!

The whole operation of JJJ as a national youth broadcaster has done untold harm to Australian culturally IMHO.

But if a little bit of good comes of it every now and then we have to take it eh?

Congrats to the Cock – hard work recognised.

For numerous reasons, I find the unearthed program – since the format changed – a reprehensible exploitation of young musicians for low cost attainment of local music quotas.

Now to add to that, Canberra bands are ‘rewarded’ by playing to a whole lot of people who already know they are awesome. JJJ needs a kick in the nuts – the only thing Canberra musicians lack is a larger population base and the subsequent exposure which leads to increased popularity and ultimately radio play, label interest and ultimately, the opportunity to do what you love for a living on a small and meagre wage.

Blake has done a great job in getting jjj sponsorship of Trackside, yet it’s arguable that out of all the national festivals, Trackside would have been the easiest for a Canberra band to find their way into the line-up.

While other metropolitan Unearthed winners with already large fan bases get real exposure to huge new audiences at Homebake or tours with major artists, Canberra bands – on a comparative level – get shafted.

My long held disgust at our national broadcaster’s disdain for the talent in our capital grows forever stronger.

so cranky right now.
