There is an innovative business event occurring on 28 March 2017 at the Hyatt Hotel. The “Edge of leadership un-conference” is an interesting title for a business leadership event. Reading through the material on the web site, I, like most business owners started thinking, what am I going to get from this event? In short, what is the return on investment of no income for the day and paying for the registration?

When I was asked to catch up with the facilitator of the un-conference, Zoe Routh from Inner Compass, I jumped at the opportunity. I was keen to find out a little more about the person and what makes her tick. Why would I give my time to this event?

In talking, I soon discovered that Zoe gets the business leader. She speaks of “the tsunami of change and disruption” that we all experience at the micro level as business owners and leaders. She understands the elephant in the room of needing to address deep self-mastery. Putting in place the disciplines or habits that will allow us to weather to the constant barrage of information and demand upon us as business people. As we explored the more macro level of leadership, we recognised that we are biological humans who need to eat well, sleep well, meditate, exercise and rest. We further discussed the process of moving beyond survival into development and transformation. As I said earlier, Zoe gets the business owner.

Our conversation continued to an area that is starting to weigh on Zoe. Her recent article “After international women’s day let’s talk men” on LinkedIn and other platforms sheds light on Zoe and her passionate heart. She recognises the gender pendulum that exists within society and particularly the business community. I will be interested in further contributions to that discussion.

This leads me to reflect on her social conscience. The un-conference supports both MensLink and Outward Bound. Both are organisations that seek to build resilience in people to do life better.

The Un-conference will give people the frameworks and the thinking skills to start addressing how you go between the tension of burning fires now and the raging fires on the horizon, how you navigate that, how you deal with both at the same time.

If you are at the decision point in relation to registering for the un-conference, I would do it. I believe there will be massive return on investment from this event. Your time commitment will realise return in your business as you network and intentionally implement strategies for business growth.

Zoe is also published. With over 30 years experience, she has published “Composure: How Centered Leaders Make the Biggest Impact” and “Moments: Leadership When It Matters Most.”
