fish in fountain

Came across an interesting site on a walk around Lake Burley Griffin. The Memorial near the fountain had a rather large fish in it!

My guess is that a fisherman may have caught it and threw it in there as I dont see any other way it could have found its way in there!

It’s a lovely addition to the fountain.
But, yeah, agree that it is cruel without having any source to feed on.

Carps can live off anything. Anyone want to throw it some bread crumbs?

Yep. Positive ID on carp suspect loitering in fountain.
So now someone can release it.

(The above contains a deliberately provocative statement for people with no idea about carp fishing regulations in the ACT)

yeah, it’s a bit rough. I wonder if insects are coming close enough for him to get them?

Poor thing must be so hungry

Closer crop now attached.

Maybe someone’s testing the theory that if you flush them out with clean water they don’t taste too bad?

Carp have three fins along their ‘bottom’, but the other common LBG species (redfin, golden perch and – not so common – cod) have only two. This fish seems to have 3.

Plus its the wrong colour for a reddie and not really a perch shape.

So given how common carp are, all signs point to carp.

Pretty cool, I reckon!

Just from the fact that someone caught it and put it in there, it’s likely to be a carp..

From the limited view Id say it was a carp because of the shape and the fins.

Can we have a crop of this or the original image for some species identification please?
