The Matildas' Effect: Canberra United scores a new sponsor on the back of World Cup fever

The momentum created by the Matildas’ success in the World Cup has significantly increased interest in the domestic A-League Women’s competition.

The impact is being felt across the board, with Canberra in the midst of unprecedented interest with a record number of memberships already sold.

There’s also plenty of interest in sponsorship packages.

The latest to sign on is the Midnight Hotel, Autograph Collection. Autograph Collection Hotels throughout the world are significant in that each hotel offers a story and experience that is unique to that place. It is inevitably unforgettable for the visitor.

And Midnight Hotel, Autograph Collection offers that unique story.

Midnight Hotel, on Elouera Street, Braddon, will have its logo on the front of players’ shorts, as well as on both sleeves of the Canberra United game-day staff shirts.

With 11 home matches at the McKellar Stadium in the extended 22-game season, there will be plenty of exposure for Midnight Hotel.

Canberra United CEO Ivan Slavich said it’s great to see local businesses getting behind the team.

“As a Canberra-based business, we are extremely happy that they have got behind our local club. Canberra United is unique in the women’s football landscape, much like the Midnight Hotel is in their area of expertise.”

Canberra United remains the only standalone team in the A-League Women’s competition with no matching men’s side at this stage.

Brett Walker, the General Manager of Iconic Hotels by Geocon, which manages Midnight, said the partnership with Canberra United makes perfect sense.

“This is a fantastic brand alignment and represents the continued support the Midnight Hotel provides local Canberra businesses and associations. The team at the Midnight Hotel are very excited to be a proud major partner for the season ahead.”

Coach Njegosh Popovich has a new-look team to mould together before the opening game against Adelaide on 15 October.

With the likes of Grace Maher and Laura Hughes heading to rival teams, Popovich has been active in the player marketplace.

Former Chilean international Maria Rojas returns, while New Zealand under-20 international Ruby Nathan and Young Matilda Tegan Bertolissio will make their debuts for Canberra.

Canberra legend Michelle Heyman returns for her 12th season with United.

Canberra United will play the Western Sydney Wanderers in a pre-season game in Forbes in the Challenge Cup on 23 September.
