Emma and Carla Papas are the Merrymaker Sisters.

The name sounds like something from a previous era – Dickensian maybe?

But these young ladies are just as modern as tomorrow. Their thing is food that makes you feel good.

The Paleo approach. Well, pretty much… They include quinoa in some of their recipes and apparently that’s not strictly Paleo.

Personally I find quinoa quirappy, but that’s what makes out nation great: the freedom to hold varied opinions about the differing food groups and still maintain a reasonable level of social harmony.

The present fondness for quinoa reminds of the cous cous craze of the nineties. To me it’s semolina with ideas above its station.

I once had a lady friend who asked that I cook her dinner for her birthday.

Requests of this kind stem from some primal urge in the human female to see the human male working in front of her eyes even though he may have been working very hard and much more productively elsewhere all day.

However, I went ahead in the hope of the usual rewards later.

Knowing her fondness for cous cous I included it in the meal. As I find it about as appetizing as those little anhydrous granules labelled “Do Not Eat” you find in powdered vitamins, I loaded the cous cous up with as much butter as it could possibly absorb.

She voted it the best cous cous she’d ever eaten.

When I told my son the fitness guru of my accomplishment, he said “All our recipes are based on adding sugar or salt to fat”.

Pretty drab concept huh? But there’s nothing drab about the Merrymaker Sisters. Have a listen…
