I’ve just noticed that the National Portrait Gallery is looking for entries to the National Photographic Portrait Prize 2011.
The National Photographic Portrait Prize is an annual event intended to promote the very best in contemporary photographic portraiture by both professional and aspiring Australian photographers. The exhibition will be displayed at the National Portrait Gallery from 25 February to 17 April 2011 and tour to selected venues throughout 2011
With the generous support of VISA, the Gallery is offering a prize of $25,000 for the most outstanding photographic portrait
The Gallery will accept entries from 16 August until 5pm (AEST) on 12 November 2010. Each entrant may submit up to three entries for selection for the Prize. No more than one entry from each entrant can be selected for exhibition. The fee for each entry is $25 including GST (non refundable). Entrants must be aged 18 years or over at the time of entry. All entrants must be Australian residents.

might sound like it, but it is quite a prestigious award, something like the archibald for photography… it is not a scam. unless you’d imagine perhaps powderfinger, midnight oil, acdc and the living end all paying for their shot on a compilation cd…

This sounds like one of those, pay 500 bucks and we will issue a canberra bands cd with your band on it, scams.
Change bands to poetry, short story, portrait – scam is the same.

well, to cover the prize – there are doubtless administrative costs in running such an initiative… (and they do get a significant no. of entries – btw, my sister was a finalist in the inaugural event 😉 )
i wasn’t as taken with the pool of finalists last year and again thought the photo adjudged the winner was not nearly the best portrait. this competition also opens the can of worms of just what constitutes a ‘portrait’… the first winner, for mine, wasn’t one!
They only need 1000 entries to break even!
