They stopped making Raiders' Milk because it was awful. But it's coming back with a taste of Brumby

The Canberra Times has the unfortunate news that Canberra Milk’s appalling lime flavoured green milk of yesteryear is coming back to convince dog sex enthusiasts of the merits of drinking milk.

Even worse they’re working on a Brumby flavoured milk as well.

Dear Reader, what would Brumby flavoured milk taste like?

Noticed Canberra Milk Chocolate and a Honey Choc Malt in the shops today. They’d sold out of the latter in all but the 2L bottle, so I gave the chocolate a try as it was in a small carton.

Wasn’t too bad. Not quite as chocolatey as Oak. Will be interested to see how long this local production of flavoured milk lasts.

Many people might not know that Canberra Milk actually discontinued Raiders Lime in the 1990s and replaced it with Raiders Malt. Interesting to hear that it is making a comeback and the fat content will be reduced in an attempt to get it into school canteens.

The ad campaign in the 1990s was completely bogus, claiming that Raiders Lime was “what they really drink in the dressing room”. I am the nephew of a Raiders player of the period and was in the change rooms quite often. It was always awash with beer, in fact the whole game was. If anybody tried drinking milk – flavoured or otherwise – they would have been laughed out of the place.

I’d imagine that it’d taste like a horse smells.

Still, if they’re grinding up brumbies to make it, I’m all for it. It’s about time we got rid of those pests.

Oh, no. Don’t tell me we are to have another load of postings about that Bill and Boyd song from the 1960s. If you want to reference it, the proper spelling is Chulu Chululu. I don’t know where that other spelling came from.

It comes from H.P. Lovecraft, creator of Cthulhu in 1928.

The advent of Raiders Lime in the early 1990s reinforced to me what a second rate place this was. When I visited Qld for holidays in the early to mid 1980s the thing I really liked was the wide selection of milks in the chilled cabinets in the milk bars and supermarkets. Egg flip, Ovaltine, Natural, Oak flavoured milk and about three other great varieties. I returned to Canberra and all I could find was Moove in four flavours. A few years later it was joined by Raiders Lime. When the ads came on, all I could think about were those fridges full of goodies up north and I wondered why we had to put up with such crap.
