Things to do in Canberra this week (6 - 12 October)

It’s a musical week in the capital, with the National Vintage Guitar Expo, a special Spring-time outdoor concert and a rebellion-themed live performance revue.

There’s also lots of family-friendly fun in the form of a Latin American Festival, an opportunity to learn about fire safety and a belated Floriade festival.

Plus, hear from up-and-coming change-makers, innovators, and artists at TEDxCanberra, explore Government House and lots more.

This Friday, the NFSA presents the Canberra premiere of Kindred, a new documentary about family, love and loss. Also, on Friday, the NFSA celebrates the 10th anniversary of Vinyl Lounge with an appearance from Greg Evans (remember Perfect Match?) And on Thursday, the SCIENCE. ART. FILM. series continues with a free screening of Total Recall and a discussion about sci-fi and ‘real world’ research.

TEDxCanberra is Canberra’s ideas festival, bringing together up-and-coming change-makers, innovators, and artists from the Canberra region and elsewhere in Australia. This year’s theme is beyond. Speakers will explore how we can shake up the status quo and push the limits of our imagination, intelligence, courage and capability as we go higher, faster and stronger together.

Join the Canberra Symphony Orchestra String Quintet and Rachael Thoms for an outdoor musical journey that pays homage to the season of rebirth. Enjoy well-known music and songs, spanning classical, jazz, opera and musicals over some afternoon tea (add a Picnic Box to your booking for an additional fee) at the historic Lanyon Homestead, overlooking the Murrumbidgee River.

Government House Open Day

Tour the house and gardens of one of the most historic properties in Australia, Government House. Take one of several free non-ticketed guided walking tours held throughout the day, and after, spread a picnic rug and take in the atmosphere and views. Bring your food and drinks, or treat yourself to a sausage sizzle and coffee.

La Fiesta Latin American Festival

This free and inclusive, all-ages celebration will transform the heart of Canberra’s City Centre into a vibrant festival of Latin American food, music, art, culture and dance. There’ll be games and activities and a display of art that embodies the spirit of Latin American nations. Locals and visitors will also be treated to a diverse range of more than 10 Latin artists from around Australia.

The cast is queer and the music is rebellious. Music & Mayhem: Rebellion is a live performance revue about rebellion, living authentically and doing the unexpected, particularly through a queer lens. Canberra band nonbinarycode will perform live, alongside fire eating, water dancing in a giant martini glass, drag, sideshow, butoh, feather fan dancing, fan veil dancing and burlesque.

Canberra’s Forgotten Suburb is not to be forgotten any longer. The Oaks Estate Floriade Festival is back bigger and better than ever in its second year. Experience a vibrant day filled with local Bush Bands’ music, delicious sausage sizzles and a range of market stalls. Kids and adults are in for a treat with kite flying, bubbly adventures and fun games at this must-attend family affair.

National Vintage Guitar Expo 2023

When: Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 October, from 10 am

The National Vintage Guitar Expo celebrates vintage and rare acoustic and electric guitars, amplifiers and accessories from around Australia. Expo visitors can meet and talk with makers and exhibitors, participate in interactive demonstrations and workshops, browse a display of historic instruments, attend a special concert and explore everything to do with the world of guitars.

Rural Fire Service Open Day 2023

Googong’s annual Rural Fire Service Open Day brings fun-filled entertainment and fire safety education for the whole family. The free event is an opportunity to celebrate Jerrabomberra Creek Rural Fire Brigade’s volunteers while getting a refresher on disaster preparedness. Children can also get a taste of what it’s like to be a firefighter alongside live music and community stalls.
