Tiger Woods lovers on public ovals

By icantbelieveitsnotbutter - 20 October 2009 16

My first post after being a long-time reader… i complain a great deal but i felt this one worthy of writing about.

I was trotting across Southwell Park on the weekend, just past the back of the Netball Centre, and some numpty almost ko’d me with a golf ball! Now i’m all for sharing, but **** me, if that had hit… Anyway, I looked up and he was some 200m away… Surely that’s too much room for one person to be using.

I heard in NSW it’s unlawful to do this? Should it be the same here?

What’s Your opinion?

Southwell Park is one of the few places where you can actually go and knock a few golf balls around. There are signs placed about the place reminding to pay attention to the odd travelling ball at your melon.

Along with all those golf courses (indoor and out) and driving ranges.

Odd ball at my melon = odd ball rammed up your ass

In Australia, it is written and pronounced arse.

I have no problem with people hitting balls on ovals. But to do it when there is someone there deserves a reckless endangerment charge.

Reckless endangerment?

Watch a bit more American TV

In previous life I had occasion to raise this as an issue. It isn’t unlawful to hit golf balls on ACT Ovals AND it is incumbant on the user of the ovals to check for golfballs left behind for insurance purposes. It’s ridiculous but that’s the way it is. I had extensive discussions with the Rangers and the Sportsground office and they all stated that there is nothing to be done about it. Unless the oval is hired by a user group, it is free for anyone to use in an ‘unorganised’ activity at their own risk.

Pay attention?

Have you ever watched golf on television where the cameraman flails around like a lunatic for 10 seconds before switching back to the green… only to find the ball has gone into the stands…

One can try and keep an eye out, but seriously… driving range?

Hey RandomGit – the houses in question are well over 400metres away on my estimation – probably well out of range – and the club wouldn’t be allowed to operate if there was the slightest danger -the Safety Nazis in the ACT Administration would have closed it down ages ago don’t you think?

One person hitting balls on the oval is just selfish. But this is Canberra where selfishness is a fine art.

I generally tell my dog to ‘fetch’. And he does.

run around and grab as many of his balls as you can while he runs the first 150m then sprint away. that’ll learn him.

Golfballs? Nothing! You’d be surprised indeed if you knew where the archery range is in Lyneham and which direction they shoot in.

He could have been a crap golfer who lucked out with a good shot unexpectedly.

go ask him if he was aiming at you, then if he was put a few quid in his kick and tell him to go on the tour, caddy for him, and when he wins the masters, come back and galavant with new-found wealth! ; )

I’m pretty sure it’s unlawful here too, though I cannot find a mention to it on any official website.
