Australia has the Wiggles and it has Jimmy Barnes too, but it also has a rocking Federal Arts Minister who is right there supporting them – literally.

Tony Burke has joined (ahem, started) a rock band of his own, with some of his staff members onboard and with somewhat of an open invitation for other MPs to join in.

It’s not a casual thing, either. This is serious business.

The band, known as Left Right Out, has already debuted at a private party held inside a Canberra pub and is about to hit the big time.

That’s because things don’t get any bigger than the Wiggles and Jimmy Barnes.

Left Right Out will be the backing band for the Wiggles at a quietly planned event being held at Parliament House in a matter of days – on Wednesday, 24 May.

It’s even in the Great Hall!

The event is aiming to build awareness of children’s entertainment, but there’s more to it than that.

Burke’s band will follow up their Wiggles set on the same evening and same stage as the backing band for Barnesy.

After that, Left Right Out might be left up to their own devices.

The Minister is on rhythm guitar and, from all accounts, is not too shabby with the old electric six-string.

Staff members variously hop on vocals, bass and drums (although, as seen here in this pic, on the night of their party gig, the Australian Financial Review’s political editor Phil Coorey was a last-minute ring-in on drums).

Then there’s the ins and outs of other MPs wanting a share of the limelight – if they can make the grade.

But it’s not fame the band is after.

It’s meant to be a bit of fun after a hard week at the office.

The Wiggles gig was being kept under wraps — until Region happened to sniff it out.
