UC decision on future of residences

The Unversity of Canberra’s Council met this afternoon to decide whether to give control of all its student residences to a private company, the Student Association says.

If the proposal was accepted (it is unknown at this time what happened at the meeting), the residences would be handed over to an unnamed company in a build-own-operate-transfer arrangement.

Student Association President Marc Emerson thinks (of course) this is an outrage. It probably is, but he also goes on to draw a comparison with the situation of the residents of the Narrabundah long-stay caravan park and says it confirms the National Union of Students’ condemnation of UC as “one of the least student friendly universities in the country”.

His full rant is below.

Students at the University of Canberra are set to lose their homes as well as well as their student union if moves by the University are successful today.

The Universities Council will meet this afternoon to decide on a proposal to hand over control of all Student Residences to a private company under a build-own-operate-transfer arrangement.

This secret plan by the University comes just days after UC was named by the National Union of Students as being one of the least student friendly universities in the country.

President of the University of Canberra Students’ Association Marc Emerson said, “This is an outrage, at a time when Students are studying for exams this university is once again about to not only steal our union, but to give away students homes as well

“Students have not been told their homes are about to be given away, they have not received assurance that rent will not rise and there is no guarantee that they will not be cast out on the streets in a replay of the Narrabundah Caravan park fiasco,

“This is another example of the University fleecing students for as much money as possible with as little cost, UC cannot calls itself student friendly anymore

“If I was a student planning on living on campus, I would be very concerned right now; this university cannot look after its students, only its bottom line

“We call on Council to reject these proposals and recognize them for what they are, an unwarranted and ill-conceived attack on the welfare of students.” Concluded Mr. Emerson

The University of Canberra Council will meet at 4:30pm to debate these resolutions.

Depends on the the performance of the organisation running the outfit. It would not be that hard to find some efficiency gains in an organisation like university admin/mgmt. Inevitably, what happens is the standard of service is reduced, to reduce costs. Efficiency will definitely improve, but the beneficiary will be the for-profit organisation, not the consumer.

Giving control to a private entity will result in that private entity making profit form the arrangement. They may (will) be more efficient that the university, so the profit may not effect the cost to the students. My thought is that the uni should lift it’s game in terms of managing the residences, and not pike out.

Owned by a for-profit-organisation /= more efficient. It can do, but not neccessarily. Most commonly it means that the privitised entity is run at a reduced cost by having corners cut, which does effect a cost on the consumer (through having to put up with shittier delivery of services).

When I was on the UC Student Union it was remarkable how the aged admins of various student groups lined their pockets by gouging budgets and cooking the books.

I can’t back that up, they restructured the union when we tried to to knobble our student rep powers.

VERY student hostile.

This Marc Emerson is a oxygen thief.
