LAVERS

When I started these Unearthed Reviews I was given very simple instructions.

Go look though the ACT artists alphabetically. If you see an artist or group with a green or red drum next to their name that we haven’t reviewed, review them.

Simple. Except I’ve now done a full loop.

I’m gonna need a new way to pick bands… or maybe I’m free?

Before I work that out however, I’m gonna listen to the Lavers.

Here’s what they have to say about themselves:

We’ve just recorded our new single, ‘I’ve Been Waiting For You’, at Studios 301 in Sydney with Simon Todkill (Matt Corby, Nantes, The Griswolds).

Hope you like it!

Short and sweet. Here’s what I have to say about them:

They sound like Oasis.

These guys are obviously huge brit-pop fans, which is cool. Everyone likes a bit of brit-pop.

It’d be nice if they swung a little more towards Damon Albarn than Noel Gallagher, but that’s just my taste.

While these guys do sound quite a bit like Oasis they are very definitely their own entity, and the three tracks they’ve got up on the site each has its own personality.

Their lyrics are strong and likeable, if not particularly inventive, and the vocals are clear, smooth, and well practised. A very welcome change from the rougher garagey sounds many indie rock groups are favouring these days.

I’ve Been Waiting for You is my pick of the bunch. If you’re a fan of the genre you’ll love it. It almost feels like a love letter to brit-pop. It’s quick, fun, and tight. The lyrics would not have seemed out of place in a Monkees song. The tune is bouncy and the bands love for the style comes though. Heaps of fun.

The other two tracks (Cosmic Ambulance, and Our Little Empire) didn’t resonate quite as well with me, but were still very pleasant. Give them a listen, they’re wonderfully relaxed, they just lack that little spark that the first track has.

Three and a half stars.
