The University of Canberra is now considered to be among the world’s top 40 young universities, according to the latest young university rankings released this week.

Times Higher Education, which ranks 351 of the world’s best universities aged 50 years or younger, listed the University of Canberra at number 34, a jump of 24 places from last year’s ranking of 58.

Universities from over 60 countries across Europe, Australasia, Asia, North America, Latin America and Africa feature in the eighth annual edition of the table, with Hong Kong’s University of Science and Technology being named the world’s best young university for the second year in a row.

Out of Australia’s 22 universities represented in the rankings, UC was ranked Australia’s sixth-best young university, finishing behind University of Technology Sydney (13), Queensland University of Technology (24), University of South Australia (26), University of Wollongong (29) and James Cook University in Queensland (33).

UC’s outgoing Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Deep Saini said the ranking cemented the University of Canberra’s place among the world’s top young universities.

“We are delighted with the latest results from the young university rankings. It is a testament to the quality of our staff and their continued efforts, and we will all share in this achievement,” Professor Saini said.

“This result achieves a key objective in our Distinctive by Design strategic plan to be in the top 50 young universities in the world. It is fantastic to reach this goal three years ahead of schedule.

“To rise so quickly through rankings is a solid indication that we are progressing in the right direction and is just a fantastic recognition of the value and potential of the University of Canberra.”

According to the 2019 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the University of Canberra is considered to be among the world’s top 300 universities, steadily rising since it entered in 2016.

UC’s rise in the world rankings follows a similar trajectory to the latest QS Rankings, where the University of Canberra rose 135 places to sit at number 484, the most significant improvement of any university in the world.

I was concerned by a TV report calling UC “A young university” which has only been in operation for 31 years. This is not correct.

The university was established in 1968. Indeed, I was a student there in 1986-88, before the 31 years timeframe which has been mentioned.

I don’t know why certain media organisations are making the claim that the university was only established in 1988 because there were many of us who were there before that and we have our certificates to prove it.
