More than eight kilometres of the Monaro Highway will be rehabilitated and a stretch of the Kings Highway upgraded as a result of a joint funding package from the Federal and ACT Governments.

Just over $26 million will flow for the two priority upgrades.

Member for Eden-Monaro Kristy McBain said the roads were used by more than 20,000 people each day travelling to and from work.

“That’s on top of thousands of people from across Eden-Monaro that use these highways every week to access important services in the ACT, and the tens of thousands from Canberra that head away on weekends to make the most of what our fantastic communities have to offer – from the coast to the snow,” she said.

More than eight kilometres of the Monaro Highway will be rehabilitated, from the Jerrabomberra Creek intersection at Hindmarsh Drive to David Warren Road.

This will include both the south and northbound carriageways, as well as the on- and off-ramps on both sides of the road.

Pavement rehabilitation work is expected to be completed later this year.

The Monaro Highway upgrades will be supported by $17.5 million from the Federal Government – building on the $230.5 million improvements already being delivered to this road network – jointly funded by both governments.

Also, $8.6 million in Federal Government funding has been put towards improvements to the Kings Highway at Kowen.

A two kilometre stretch, from the Mill Post Road intersection to the ACT/NSW border, will receive surface upgrades on both sides of the road.

The works are expected to be completed later this year.

Federal Member for Canberra, Alicia Payne said the upgrades would benefit people on both sides of the ACT-NSW border.

“These road upgrades will improve safety for Canberrans, whether on their daily commute, or visiting interstate family and friends,” she said.

Construction tenders for these key safety improvements have closed, and tender evaluation is being carried out by the ACT Government.

ACT Government’s Minister for City and Government Services, Tara Cheyne said the upgrades would increase road safety.

“We’re ensuring commuters in Canberra and the surrounding regions have reliable roads and can safely travel between NSW and the ACT – which is exactly what these latest upgrades will support.”

They wouldnt be accessing health services because there are none

Normal road maintenance should not be news.

Exactly, it’s not an upgrade, it’s just restoring it to what it should be if anyone actually bothered to maintaining it.

Fixing 8km of a road is not newsworthy, typical spin and propaganda for nothing.
