Vikings burned by Rays

Yesterday the sun was out for a beautiful spring day at Manuka oval, but unfortunately the Rays were a bit too strong for the Canberra Vikings. A very good crowd (for Manuka Oval) of 3700 turned up to see a tough closely contested game. Personally I was hoping (and expecting) a Viking slaughter, but Central Coast always seemed to stay just infront. With 20 minutes to go Pat Phibbs sneaked through to score the only try for the Vikings, and briefly pulled them ahead. Unfortunately the rays turned up the heat again to score a converted try, bringing the final score to 17 – 13. In the last minutes of the game the Vikings seiged the Ray’s tryline, even being held up over the line a couple of times, but they were unable to capitalise on their advantages.

The loss sees the Vikings slip to 3rd place in the ARC, behind Western Sydney and Melbourne. With the Vikings two remaining games away from home against these guys it will be a tough run to the finals.

Full details of the game are available on Brumbies Rugby.

[CHE] – I’ve added in some of the photos I took at the game.

I would think for the cost of having that guy run around with the cable behind the camera man, they could invest in a wireless transmitter and tape deck.

last one I promise,
and the bloody ABC camera crew kept on moving to stand right in front of us

and another thing…
the deliberate knock down of the ball right in front of the touchie to end the game was attrocious. It should have been another penalty to the Vikings to allow them to continue attacking until the ref finally decided to award a penalty try for all the constant infringements in the last 5 minutes. The Rays knew that a penalty was no good to the Vikings so they were happy to keep on fouling.

Would have been nice if the Vikings could have got the ball down one of the 3 times they went over the try line though.

The Brett Sheehan try was a load of bollocks. Jye Mullane was tackled and held up over the try line which is where the play should have stopped and been a 5m scrum. The video ref even said that it was held up and that it should not have been recycled back into the field of play for the Rays to have another go.
