Husband and I are planning a last minute, mid-week getaway. Grateful for any recommendations/ thoughts of what we can see and do. Keen to explore regions around Canberra (ie not Sydney). TIA.

Too late to help you this week, but if you’re interested in exploring the region, I had a great weekend at Wombeyan Caves recently. It was about 2-2.5 hours from Canberra going via Goulburn and Taralga. Cabin, dorm and camping options for accommodation. Probably better for a weekend trip to coincide with the scheduled cave tours.

My husband and I had a lovely mini break at Laggan last year near crookwell in this converted church – http://www.stayz.com.au/accommodation/nsw/southern-highlands/crookwell/115476 it was a bit pricey but something unique!

There’s a really great kind of restaurant thing down the road (5 minute walk!) at the Mill but it is tricky to book.

Most of Canberra (and half of Sydney) will be up at the snow. Not the place to be if you want quiet and/or cheap. The NSW south coast is pretty nice at this time of year and off-peak accommodation too.
