What is your favourite BBQ place?

Once upon a time Umbagong Park between McGregor, Latham and Holt had BBQ’s, but because there’s nowhere to park, and the tables are shite the grass is usually 3ft high, and there’s no tap water available nobody uses them…so now there’s a sign that they’re gonna take them away. Too bad they didn’t think of the practical things people need in order to have a BBQ in the first place… Umbagong Park…Canberra’s best urban waste of space.

Uh huh … and Casuarina Sands. Gosh, I love Canberra!

we used to to uriarra crossing and black mountain penisula as kids which was always nice.

the new area at tidbinbilla is great for kids, an excellent playground and BBQ’s.

Same with Murray’s Corner. We always loved it there and had such nice memories.

My dad used to take us out for BBQ breakfasts at Gibraltar Falls when we had people visiting. We’d have chops and sausages and peaches and cornflakes and cream and lots of other yummy stuff. Perfect.

But it wasn’t anywhere near as good last time we went. Sad in a way.

most of the really good areas now aren’t a patch on what they were prior to the fires. We still go to the Kambah woolshed from time to time, or the adventure playground, but most of the good spots in the areas around canberra seem to have been diminished.

At the Cotter is great, the BBQs are usually really clean & it’s a lovely setting. Less than 10 minutes from our place makes it extra handy.

Go before Christmas! Once the Euro wasps get about it may get closed again.

Wow springbank island has all of that – thats cool – would be a good place for a summer nights picnic (and well, we won’t go there) with your loved one, whatever your disposition.

Other places that spring to mind include Murrays Corner (5ish k’s from cotter reserve) Vanitys crossing, Barracks flat used to be good before the bushfires (Near Blue Range Hut), Blue Range hut – and if you really like the solitary quietude – Bulls Head is always good.

Had dinner there skyfire night and watch the fireworks from Brindabella road.

Dont really know much down south – except Homneysuckle (Already mentioned) and Orroral Valley (Good place for RC planes and heli’s)

Springbank Island on Lake Burley Griffin.
The BBQs are on the western end of the island and they are the free push button gas type. A shelter is nearby in case of an unexpected shower, toilets and a scattering of picnic tables. Lots of shady trees and a a large clearing for a spot of cricket etc. The only way to access the island is by boat however during the warmer months there is a steady flow of people that arrive via sailboat, canoe or paddleboat. Great for kids birthdays with a ‘Pirate or Mermaid’ theme.
