Where to get cargo shorts and a straw cowboy hat in Canberra in July?

johnboy 23 July 2012 19

So later in the week I’m handing you lot over to the untender mercies of Editorial Resource No 2 and jetting to Japan for the RiotACT Tokyo Bureau Chief’s bucks night.

Now the bucks proceedings are at the Fuji Rock festival which means your correspondent needs clothing suitable for a summer festival.

In particular I’d like a big straw cowboy hat (the last one was *improved* by the Kelpie of Few Accomplishments) and two pairs of cargo shorts.

But who’s selling such things in the dark midwinter of Canberra circa July?

Over to you hivemind.

Well I just came in here to mention that the latest Big W catalogue has straw cowboy hats for $9.94 (it does say “ladies” but they just look like a straw cowboy hat to me, what’s the difference between ladies and mens??).

But I re-read the original post and it seems I am too late. So let this be a FYI for anyone else looking lol

The Cancer Council shop is out near the airport, so if you were canny you could buy one there. Only open limited hours though. The hats cover a full range from Mum made me wear it to quite nice.

Forget the straw cowboy hat and get one of those big straw mexican-type hats everyone wears at Summernats. Much more shade efficient lol. Available at Homebase (ie $2 shop) at Woden Plaza for a few dorrars.

I look ludicrous in sombrero and cool in a straw cowboy hat.

    It’s an easy decision.

Definitely op shops & you shouldn’t have a problem.

Good luck! I head up to Nagoya every early August- which is a horible time to go. The humidity is murder this time of year- you really do miss the foggy Canberra mornings.

Regarding cargo pants, Rivers?

I can’t decide whether I’m flattered or weirded out by being referred to as “Editorial Resource No 2” (It is me you’re referring to, right?). I think…I’ll take it as a compliment? (And what’s all this about ‘untender mercies’?!)

I’m looking forward to hearing about your upcoming reign of terror.

Whether they’re in the shops or just online is another question. Paddy Pallin?

If there’s nothing suitable, sit in the Roasters and whinge about needing them for Japan until jealous people attack you.

As to the straw hat, I would suggest Anglicare in Queanbeyan etc, (I bought an Italian straw hat recently) but as you grotty worker types don’t have time to troll through every opshop, perhaps Surf Dive Sea (spelling?) in Bunda Street for Billabong or similar?

I noticed on the weekend that some stores are getting their spring gear in now so you might be able to find something. Otherwise try Trade Secret as they seemed to have a mix of seasonal stuff.

Places like Kathmandhu might stock cargoes even at this time of the year. You’re getting really close to spring stock coming out though so you might even manage to see some at General Pants, Just Jeans and places like that. Did you check out that hat stand as you enter Canberra Centre from Ainslie Avenue side? All the surf shops would probably stock them year round I’d imagine.
