Traffic disruptions will occur on roads around Canberra Airport, Yarralumla, the Australian War Memorial, Parliament House and Black Mountain today (21 October) between 11:30 am and 6 pm during the visit of King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Sections of Anzac Parade, Limestone Avenue and Fairbairn Avenue near the Australian War Memorial will be closed between 10 am and 1:30 pm.

Parliament Drive and sections of Kings Avenue, Commonwealth Avenue and Federation Mall will be closed between 1 pm and 3 pm.

In a statement, ACT Policing said people travelling to Canberra Airport today should leave plenty of time to make scheduled flights, factoring in potential delays on the roads.

People attending the events at either the Australian War Memorial or Parliament House are encouraged to use Transport Canberra’s free shuttle services departing from the City Interchange.

Further information about these services is available on the Royal visit public transport and free shuttle bus arrangements page on the Transport Canberra website.

Drivers who find themselves in delayed traffic are reminded to obey the directions of police and, if stopped, should not break road rules (including crossing verges, paths or median strips). Police say disruptions will be kept to a minimum.

“If road users encounter police managing a motorcade, we ask that they be aware of their surroundings at all times, obey the directions of police – especially at intersections, be patient, don’t drive over median strips or perform illegal U-turns, and recognise that the delay will be for a short period only as the motorcade moves through.

“ACT Policing thanks Canberra’s drivers for their understanding as this operation occurs.”

There are two opportunities for members of the public to meet Their Majesties while they’re here.

The first is from 12:35 pm when the royal couple makes their way to the ‘For Our Country’ memorial on the Australian War Memorial’s western grounds.

It’s recommended you be in place at the War Memorial no later than 11:45 am to avoid road closures and allow for security screening.

From 1 pm, you’ll then be able to catch a glimpse of Their Majesties during a ceremonial welcome in front of Parliament House, followed by an opportunity to meet them on the Parliament House forecourt from 2:10 pm.

As before, you’re encouraged to be in place no later than 12:10 pm to avoid road closures and allow for possible security screening.

From here, the royal couple will go on to plant a tree at Government House, followed by a visit to the CSIRO National Bushfire Research Laboratory for the King and a meeting with GIVIT for the Queen, of which she’s a patron.

Both will reunite at the Australian National Botanic Gardens later in the afternoon for a tour.

Visit the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet for more information.

“Both will reunite at ANBG for a tour.” For which, one notes, the entire gardens is closed off to the lower orders.

Here we are at 2024, but there’s no sign yet, that these embarrassing and patronising 19th century “tours” from the white hereditary British “royals” won’t continue 4eva.

We had a referendum in 1999. Your side lost by a wide margin. Get over it.

@Stephen Saunders
Not necessarily “4eva”.

The tours will probably continue until such stage as our Constitution is changed, via a referendum, to remove the references to the foreign national, or their appointed representative, as our head of state.
