Where to watch the Rugby World Cup in Canberra?

By johnboy 7 September 2011 34

Having taken a look at what the asshats at Nine are calling coverage of the Rugby World Cup I’m seeing a lot of pub time in my future over the next few weeks.

Which bars around town are going to be accommodating for the rugby tragics who aren’t resident in the Fox Cave?

What’s Your opinion?

Hi EvanJames,

I’m the manager at the RUC and am dissapointed (and a little supprised) that you have received slow service, especially when it was quiet. Our policy is to guarantee satisfaction and if you feel comfortable doing it, we’d love to get your feedback on the night so that we can immediately address any issues that arise.

I’d like to be able to make it up to you if you feel inclined to come back, so please ask for me and I’d be happy to shout you and your guests a meal.

Spykler, I hope we now have appropriate staffing levels on Fridays, but just to be sure if you let me know you are coming I’ll have a coldie with you.

Here’s another link for the world cup that I’ve found useful:

Jeremy, we have always had great service, even when it was slow, never had to wait!

Games delayed for a few minutes because of the ads?

a few minutes? we had 15minutes of ads in the first half an hour of play. After the ads, we came back to watch an injured player for 5 minutes – they could have shown ads during injury time like on 7. It breaks up the game and makes it less interesting for people who are new to rugby.

Games delayed for a few minutes because of the ads? Watch out, the end of the world is nigh. Exactly what difference does it make to you (when a game is played in another timezone and is delayed by an hour or two? Is knowing the score that 120min earlier going to change your life for the better? Is it really worth $100+/month for foxtel so you can know the score an hour before some other people?

Imagine even a few years ago, when the broadcasting of live games just didnt happen, and especially overseas fixtures. Would you have travelled to NZ just to watch the games live, so you didnt have to wait for the hourly news to find the latest score?

Channel 9 have finally released their RWC schedule. It is a wonder it took them so long as it is quite abbreviated:

9 out of 40 pool matches.

Nine, you suck.

any true union fan would have had foxtel years ago.

all RWC matches uninterupted in glorious high definition (thats real high definition, not the highly compressed stuff that FTA pump out)

I will definitely be watching the game at the RUC this Sunday. I always receive excellent service and the staff are always friendly. I would suspect that the person above is never satisfied where ever he goes. It’s a sad reflection on him not the club

How on earth did you arrive at that conclusion? seriously. I have outlined, in detail, our experiences, without rancour, factually. So how on earth did you arrive at that conclusion? On a quiet night at a club, is 45+ minutes OK to wait for your dinner? Really?

All Bar Nun are showing WC matches, including the opening ceremony. I know it’s not your favourite place JB, but maybe worth a shot.

We’ve managed to book a table for 10 on friday night in good view of the telly.

That remains to be seen!

Aah, the RUC. Definitely a goer for the WC.
(And yet I remember rather fondly the old Bugry Onion, less shiny than it is now with worn carpet and wobbly tables, and meat raffles where you had to sing if you won three prizes in one session.)

Most Australians are noted for their lack of willingness to complain about bad service – this has been a long standing ‘tradition’ and well known in hospitality/retail/whatever research.

If someone is posting apologetically and offering freebies…well, don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.

RUC like anywhere has its ups and downs, its a small club in a less than accessible environ no doubt operating on tight profit margins. I used to work across the road and we always found it adequate

Me? its got RWC, its got good food (when you get it), and its guaranteed to be full of good natured rugby heads. (unlike ABN) I’m there Friday for the opener !!

‘scuse fonts for reply I’m only an occasional blogger….

Hi Jeremy, thank you for your quick and professional response, I will def take you up on that offer of the coldie. Also, I forgot to mention that your staff, whilst under the pump, were friendly at all times.

Nein’s coverage is so bad that I’d like to boycott their advertisers (and let both Nein and them know I’m doing it, of course). Does anyone…
a) Know where I can find a list of Nein advertisers, and
b) Want to join in?

Ouch. Sub-text: “I think you are making that up”.

The Ruc would have suited us very well… we needed somewhere that serves good, club food (tick), close to home (tick), civilised (tick). We tried it on two separate occasions, during winter, when the main area was not full, and the time it took for our food to arrive from ordering was, frankly, unacceptable.

It was fish, schnitzls etc, nothing tricky or fancy, and from memory it was about 45 minutes (or more, thinking back). After the first time we thought it was a one-off, and since we really wanted to use the club, tried again. Identical experience. This was, I think, last winter.

If you guys weren’t aware that it was taking ages for meals to leave the kitchen, I’m not confident that bailing you up and telling you would get much of a welcoming response, to be honest. Most customers don’t like doing that, as the response is seldom very positive. Most people quietly go away and don’t come back.

It’s nice to hear things have improved, but if you guys weren’t aware that food service was routinely slow, I have to wonder about that.

We really wanted to use the Ruc. One of our party even joined, but never bothered to pick up the membership card as by that time we’d concluded that for quiet weekday dinners, it wasn’t going to work.

Thanks for the offer to shout us a feed, but we’re not after freebies. Maybe I can convince the others to try the Ruc again.
