WorkSafe ACT put a halt to work at 19 residential construction sites and issued 77 notices across 26 sites in Denman Prospect due to safety concerns. The notices included 55 improvement notices and two infringement notices for fall risks, which carry fines of $7,200 each.

One site was shut down completely due to multiple safety concerns after the compliance blitz last Wednesday (17 February).

The notices were in response to fall risks, unsafe scaffolding, electrical hazards, poor housekeeping and insecure site fencing, Work Health and Safety Commissioner Jacqueline Agius said.

“We issued notices at almost all of the 26 sites we visited on Wednesday because these sites posed serious health and safety risks to workers and other people who might enter the sites,” she said.

“Through Operation Safe Prospect, our ongoing campaign to improve work health and safety in the residential construction industry, we will continue to visit greenfields sites, and issue notices, to help make sure people have a safe place to work.

“Every worker deserves to go home safely at the end of a day’s work.”

One worker died on a Denman Prospect job site in January 2020 and a second man died a month later, two days after WorkSafe ACT issued 70 notices to job sites around Canberra.

More than a dozen construction sites in Denman Prospect were also shut down in early December after WorkSafe inspectors visited 21 sites in the suburb and issued 41 improvement notices and four infringement notices.
