You get what you pay for, IR rallies at the Raiders

The ABC has a story on the fallout from an IR promo at the CFMEU Raider’s game on the weekend.

If the chamber of commerce is so upset maybe they should have ponied up the cash to support the team.

In any event it seems to be working, the SMH is glowing about the 42-10 smashing of the Rorters. Some would say that has more to do with Jason Smith, but I say don’t mess with the narrative!

UPDATED: Bill Stefaniak has finally gotten around to having a whinge.

So the union made some noise and grunted a bit – who cares? I’m not going to change my mind because of some advertising, unions are still yesterday’s news.

Some people are sooooo easy to wind up

Vg,

fuck.

Vg – I am in awe of your ability to distil what appears to be a complex issue down to a singular grain of fact. No more need be said on this topic.

Not hard to work out. League is a bogan’s game and the majority of those yelling and screaming at CFMEU rallies are bogans.

If you object to the CFMEU pedalling its brand of industrial relations at half time – then it would be illogical to also not object to say Tooheys promoting beer. Sponsors pay for and expect a certain degree of ‘product’ placement when they sign up to somthing like this – particularly rugby league – a sport whose essential reason for being is “commercial”.

Rubbish, the historical association between Rugby League and the concerns of the working class is irrefutable.

I’m with you Spitfire3 – I thought that the Chamber are stretching the limits of credibility to carry on about a “community sporting event” when it’s the NRL. Sure, if the CFMEU showed up at an u14s game on some windy paddock out in Belco and did what they did the Chamber might have a point.

Are they suggesting that the CFMEU thing had less crowd appeal than standing in the queue for the dunnies or getting a beer and a pie? Surely all those colourful balloons would be more appealing to the kiddies than watching some twit in a Michelin Man outfit trying to win $200 by kicking a drop goal …

I took the kids. It was a great match but the half time ‘protest’ was the usual Union inspired complete shambles, ineffective posturing and basically a waste of time “Read the banners” the abnnouncer said – bit difficult when they’re only facing the Mal Meninga Stand. A load of crap – shame the teachers couldn’t tag along and get their half day tantrum over with at the same time.

‘ACT and Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive Chris Peters acknowledged the unions’ right to air their views, but said it was “very unfortunate” they would consider it appropriate to use a community sporting event to air them.’

But being absolutely drowned in commercial advertisements while at a community sporting event is not unfortunate? I was at the game on Sunday (It was a great game, btw! Nicely done Raiders!) and I support the CFMEU’s latest effort.

My nephew who is a member of the CFMEU in WA didn’t mine taking strike action last night but said he didn’t want to participate in a street rally. Two CFMEU organisers told him it was hard to work with “two broken arms”. What a great bunch for our Raiders to be associated with!

Will the CFMEU be stationing a health and safety officer at every game now to make sure all tackles are safely executed in the prescribed manner?

Maybe it’s a good thing that Woolford’s leaving!

Yawwwn.

Ranger – bringing you that Canberra Raiders green radioactive glow!

well done. if you being manhandled out of public debate, find another way in. I wonder if there would be such an uproar if the folks from Ranger Mine, started sponsoring teams, then spruiking how groovy nuclear energy is.

The Canberra Times story on the matter says that Clinton Schifcofske and Simon Woolford also ppeared in ads played at the ground talking about how good unions are for everyone.
