The ACT branch of the Music Managers Forum (MMF) Australia is proud to present “Your Place or Mine: Home vs Studio Recording” forum.

Topics to be explored include:

How does studio versus home recording compare in terms of production, cost and final product?
Is it possible to get studio quality recordings at home?
Are recording studios too expensive for the independent artist?

Confirmed Panelists include:

Tony Cohen (Record Producer and Mixer)
Tony Cohen’s career in recording reads like a road map of the development of the local music industry from the mid 70’s right through to today, and overseas where his work remains consistently at the cutting edge of successful contemporary music. He has spent the majority of his adult life in padded cells also known as recording studios. Some of his production credits include: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Kylie Minogue (Where The Wild Roses Grow), The Cruel Sea, Dave Graney & The Coral Snakes, The Go-Betweens, The Birthday Party, Kim Salmon & The Surrealists, The Moodists, James Freud, The Dirty Three, Beasts of Bourbon, Boys Next Door, Hoodoo Gurus, Master’s Apprentices, Hunters and Collectors, The Models, The Saints, Cold Chisel, Ratcat, The Whitlams, Fur Patrol, Frenzal Rhomb, Powderfinger, and Tex Perkins.

Kurt Neist (Metalworx – sound engineer)
Since going to his first gig, The Angels and The Choirboys, 20 years ago, Kurt from Metalworx has been passionate about live music. From the opening bars, he knew I wanted to be involved in sound, and within months, he was rolling my first microphone cables for a local sound crew. ?After learning enough to get started from watching and listening to experienced professionals, he decided to go it alone with his own system. Soon after, he was working as the in-house soundguy at the infamous Rockape (now closed) here in Canberra. After Rockape’s closure he went mobile, taking his sound sytem into venues of all shapes and sizes. These are just some of the acts he has worked with – International Acts: Insision (Sweden, Australian tour), Deeds Of Flesh (USA), Pungent Stench (Austria), Exhumed (USA), Unholy Grave (Japan), Suns Owl (Japan), Abaddon Incarnate (Eire), Rambo (USA), Neil Hamburger (USA), Dismember (Sweden). Australian Acts: Tex, Don and Charlie, Wendy Rule, Alchemist, Blood Duster, Bulldog Spirit, Psycroptic, The White Room, Contrive, Earth, Australian Kingswood Factory, The Vee Bees, Dungeon, Lord, Vanishing Point, Parkway Drive, I Killed The Prom Queen. Although mostly working with live sound, Kurt also does “project studio” work. He is currently working closely with Canberra’s hottest new venue, The Basement and has a digital recording and mixdown service.

Duncan Lowe from Infidel Studios
Duncan played in numerous bands from the mid 80’s to the late 90’s gigging continuously and recording. Eventually realising his real talent was sorting out the bands’ the technical issues, he bought a 16 track analogue tape machine, and started recording bands in peoples’ houses or wherever it sounded good. Shortly after Duncan did audio production work for Artsound FM and then in 1999 went to work at Infidel Studios becoming the majority owner in 2002. Infidel Studios endeavours to address the fast changing nature of the recording industry, by not only providing full recording production services but by also aiming to interface easily with home studios and do the things that can’t be easily done in a home recording environment. Duncan has worked with; Richard Lush (Producer, The Tulleys), Casual Projects, Early Warning System, Fred Smith, Randall Blair and the Wedded Bliss, Utility, Redletter, Smitten, Annie and the Armadillos, The Lisa Keene Trio, The Fuelers, Mi Tierra, Quick 50, The Chuffs, and Gravity Well just to name a few. Recordings from Infidel Studios have received airplay on JJJ, Radio National, Nova, and many public broadcasters around the country, and have been distributed nationally. Some internationally. Recently, Duncan has written music in collaboration with Kevin Nicol (Noiseworks) and Marcus Hooper to create a 15 minute music CD which is part of a book and CD package that is currently being published in Aus, US, UK, parts of Europe and South Africa. He has also written music for several national radio advertising campaigns. Infidel Studios also does sound design work for educational computer games that are published in many countries around the world.
