Forgive me the lame intended pun…

I’m a nOOb to the forum, don’t shoot me. I recently moved to the ACT (I’m from Belgium), a couple of days ago I stumbled onto your Canberra most haunted? thread and totally loved the stuff discussed in it. Can’t wait for Thumper’s book to be published.

Lots of locations are mentioned (though not specified) in that thread. I would love to get some more details on the exact whereabouts on some of these locations, preferably the ones you don’t need to break any laws to get in the zone.

I crave this info because as a photographer-dude I’m planning on doing a series on these spots (I know it has been done before, yet haven’t seen any pics here on the forum). I have been doing night-time photography for a while and this tread really inspired me.

Tonight I’ll be heading out to the Air Disaster Memorial to make a start.

here’s a pic I made couple of weeks ago at the Pinnacle at full moon, to get an idea …

Cheers!

Stunning photo, I would love to see more of your night shots. What camera are you using?

I noticed a place called ‘Spooks Hill’ near Canberra on a map the other day and started to wonder about the history of the area…. curious and curiouser!

Hey Buzz, can you tell me where Spooks hill is as I am seemingly unable to find it.

Love those shots.

i’ve also heard that the john gorton bldg – formerly canberra’s first administration building, pre-lake – is haunted [dunno how you’ll get in o/night with a gov’t dept there, so presumably security], as is the rex hotel on northbourne ave, braddon.

and now mully’s ghost is everywhere, so maybe just wait and he’ll come to you…

I’m interested in any hauntings in residential Kambah? Anyone know of specific places? I read the thread referring to the Kambah homestead, but what about privately?

Bam Bam #27 There is a ghost there they call BOOTS as they can hear something walking around, there is no one else in the building only the one worker, most of the workers are scared who have experienced it, Boots also comes up behind them.

Careful though – one of the first times I went there at night I was skirting 3 meter sheer drops (at ground level) that I never saw until I went there during the day.

There is also a business there (Thors Hammer) so if you are caught, regardless of intent, you could get done fro break and enter.

In any case, its trespassing.

The area appears to be fenced off to the public but I havent seen any “tresspassers will be prosecuted signs”.

When circumnavigating the fenced area one sunny day on a stroll, I cut through the back of one of the town house complexes behind the brick works, and ended up inside the fenced area, requiring the jumping of a big fence to get out again on the other side.

What about the Old Canberra brickworks (@Yarralumla). I would imagine that would be scary at night 🙂

@Thoroughly Smashed A friend uncle is a monk at the abbey of Westvleteren, you need connections to get a hold of that beer, very precious…

@Danman if you ever go out to do some more night-photography in the area I’d love to come along

@chuckie88 thanks for that info!

thanks everyone for the tips, I’ll keep you posted on the progress.

some guy commented on my blog yesterday (he probably was a riotACT reader as well):

“as crap blog as the riotact.” fat paul (…) last time I looked the riotACT was a forum…

anyway good stuff out here, thanks again good people of the RiotACT

I recently heard some spooky stories relating to experiences by an Australian Electoral Commission employee during some late night shifts at West Block Offices in Parkes. It’s a very old building. Has anyone else heard of a West Block haunting?

I worked in West Block for a few years as a young fella in the early 1980’s and there was definitely something weird going on…I’d get my fortnightly pay on a Thursday, yet by Sunday most of it was gone…spooky…

Good one!!

I’m starting to suspect the beer theory though, it happens to me all the time…

Is this the Cemetery mentioned above, or is there another? Either way, quite spooky at times.

Aye tis P1. An interesting place at night as Granny and I can attest

The War memorial is haunted also the electoral commission in Barton

Plaque*** sorry

O there are about 3 sets of gates you have to go through and walk on this big giant hill to actually get to the plague. I went on the tour last weekend was brilliant!! Theres the special 70th anniversary of the Air Disaster coming up in August, truly want to go again!

😉 Oh yeah, when you return home to visit could you grab some Westvleteren on the way back to Australia?

It’s called integration, I’m trying my best to blend in

Promise me you won’t take things too far by enjoying Australian lager.

Me and a mate scared the bejeesus out of ourselves at the Weetangera Cemetary when we were about 8. Highly recommended. My old BMX never went so fast…

Blundells Cottage is ridiculously chilling at night. My ex used to work there and we would often hang there late at night and freak out about hearing footsteps on the creaky wooden floors. Apparently every now and then they’d move the displays around a bit only to find them moved back the following morning.

You need to reach fellow RiotACT user Katietonia – if my memory serves me correctly she’s a bit of an authority on spooky Canberra.

@ramblingted I couldn’t agree more! I’m a sucker for white street lights and anything that bathes in their godly rays.
So besides the haunted places, if there’s any other spots that look great (in an eerie way) at night (I’ll pass on any of the monuments…) by all means let me know in this thread!

I’m spewin

Do all Belgians have such excellent Australian accents?

I mean, vouch…must still have the Craft Beer Festival freebie on my mind..

Nice pic, but don’t feel that the place has to look spooky to be worth a mention- the Argyle Apartments in Reid being a case in point.

As a youngster who spent hours reading Elliot O’Donnell stuff, I’d like to see Thumper’s book ASAP too..

BTW, I had the impression that Tim the Yowie Man was a bit naff- can anyone who has been on a tour voucher for the lack of cheese?

@p1 this is close to the summit of the Pinnacle (the pinnacle of the pinnacle?). Apparently last night we were on the wrong corner looking for the settlers graveyard…

Where I made this pic

@Buzz2600, cheers! I’m using a 5DMKII (full frame DSLR) combined with a bunch of vintage lenses such as old pentax glass, old canon glass etc.
you can find more of my stuff on my flickr or follow updates on my blog

cheers guys, we went to the gate of the air disaster memorial, but we didn’t feel like leaving the car there (at the gate). so we went back to the pinnacle to look for the old settlers graveyard. (can’t really tell whether we found it or not…)

@chuckie88 are you referring to the gate at the beginning of the driveway or is there a blockage further up?
Def don’t feel like getting in to trouble…

I’m spewin I just missed the Yowie Mans tours last week (found out too late) will def be going on one of these in August.

That’s a great photo to start with, keep it up!

I don’t think you want to get in trouble for trespassing

Is it on private property?

Air Disaster Memorial is actaully blocked so either you walk in the bushes to get there or go on one of the tours good luck but, and you should totally make a booking to go on the Canberra Ghost with Tim the Yowie Man. Air Disaster Memorial is one the places you’ll visit. O and p.s. security goes past there every night, and I don’t think you want to get in trouble for trespassing. Good luck though
