New 50-metre public pool for Woden still in frame despite Geocon plans

A new 50-metre outdoor pool may still be on the table for Woden, potentially in Eddison Park, despite plans for an indoor aquatic centre in the proposed Geocon development on the current pool site.

Last week, Geocon unveiled plans for a 25-metre, eight-lane indoor lap pool and other facilities as part of the first stage of its plans for the site – two 13-storey towers made up of 286 apartments, with a gap in between to allow for a large skylight over the aquatic centre.

The second stage will be developed where the 50-metre pool currently sits.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr said if Geocon’s plans were approved, there should not be a need for another indoor facility, but a seasonal outdoor pool was another matter.

“The value of having an indoor facility is it’s [open for] 12 months, and it’s not just a 25-metre pool, it’s a range of other facilities like learn to swim and the like,” Mr Barr said.

“But, of course, Canberra will need a network of outdoor pools. There is one in Manuka and there is one in Dickson, there’s Big Splash in Belconnen, so whether the south side may need an outdoor pool is something that we will look at.”

Mr Barr said the new government would undertake a feasibility study into future sporting facilities, including a recreational pool, in the Woden Town Centre, as promised during the election campaign.

He said there would not be many locations in the town centre other than Eddison Park that could accommodate a large outdoor pool.

Critics of the Geocon proposal, such as new MLA Fiona Carrick, argue that its aquatic centre, while being open all year round, would not be big enough to meet the demand in the growing Woden catchment.

“Woden attracts people moving through to their workplaces in the north, so the pool is in a very convenient location for people to stop and exercise on the way to and from work, and there are many pool users, including lap swimmers, squad trainees, water polo players and kids,” Ms Carrick said.

They also would prefer a pool with outdoor green space.

The feasibility study would look at whether there would be sufficient demand for another facility, given it would be only open over the summer months.

“You need a certain number of indoor facilities that suit lap swimmers and swimming clubs and all of those sorts of uses, but your casual recreational user who wants to sit in the shade, under a tree and then have a dip in the water with their family is a very different sort of aquatic facility,” Mr Barr said.

He said that kind of pool would have to be built by the government.

“There’s no money in pools, so the private sector would not build it of their own accord there unless you have gyms and a range of other services,” Mr Barr said.

He said Eddison Park was the most likely location, but the government was open to other suggestions.

But any proposal was a long way off, with only feasibility work to be done this term.

The Geocon pool proposal also includes a splash pad, learn-to-swim area, toddlers’ swimming area, leisure swimming area, “program pool with relaxation area”, a steam and sauna room, café, as well as an outdoor water play/splash pad and entertainment area.

The entire concept for the pool and ice skating rink on the corner of Melrose Drive and Launceston Street opposite Geocon’s freshly completed WOVA development is for five towers, the tallest being 17 storeys, to be built in three stages.

The precinct will also include ground-floor shops, a central landscaped plaza and laneways.

An indoor facility with all the add ons that make it profitable and open year round is what I’d prefer. We need a facility fit for a town centre, especially if we have the tram

Why even sell the pool and ice rink site to Geocon in the first place?

Has Canberra planners lost the plot. What ever happened to build an aesthetic city? Not this abhorrent set of high rise dystopia. Revolting greed is destroying this once pretty city.

High rise close to facilities and public transport is making this city. Urban sprawl far from facilities is dystopian.

Leave Eddison Park alone.
Scandalous idea.for a pool. It’s the only PUBLIC green space left in the Town Centre.
I support high rise devel at Woden but scale and spacing of the towers need better planning.
GEOCON and DA/pool idea on current pool site is ludicrous in the extreme.

The decision to “sell” that site to a developer and adjust planning criteria is very very dubious.

Easy solution – build a properly designed multi purpose aquatic complex with parking on Lyons Oval – a forlorn arid excuse for an oval and which is barely used and is a suitable location. You could even build the therapy pool there too.

Public pools offer high use and wide range of activity for citizens (day and night) – more bang for govt bucks than most public use projects. Have an area for outdoor activities as part of deal for the sun lovers but Canberrans climate demands indoor facilities for year round use.

Look at Stromlo Pool – massive success story.

GEOCON’s record in building “apartment” pools that operate without problems is also poor.

The ACT govt might like to reflect on their poor decision last decade to reduce the size (1500m2 to 1000m2) of Coombs shop “super”market space in the shops there- result, too small, never occupied as a supermarket, still empty – 5/6 years who is counting.
Dont make the same mistake at Phillip/Woden but you will.

As for the actions of Southern Cross Club in selling off all its recreational facilities in Woden and now proposing multiple apartment towers jammed on the old pitch putt course (no doubt once a cheap concessional lease) – words fail me. So much for the (Catholic) family community club of the 1970s – the club’s founders and board would turn in their graves.

Good luck Fiona Carrick, newly minted MLA. Sadly your election has come four years too late for Woden.

As for Phillip pool, ACT govt give it up. Accept that the developer did you over. Let them do their apartment thing (ie no public pool) there but charge them the earth in betterment fees for the change of use.

You’ve all been Geo-conned, Barr will walk on water before he does anything for those peasants living on the southern side of the lake.
There is no way in hell he will build you a 50m pool (with your own money).

If an indoor pool is such a good thing Andy, why isn’t a multi use indoor stadium?

Shut up Canberrains. You re-elected this irresponsible thug CFMEU Barr Govt that only cares for light rail.

They would rather be in bed with Geocon than actually help Southside public sporting facilities

Zed SS couldnt have said it better myself, wonder how many people on here complaining about the state of Woden and in that matter all of the south side of Canberra, actually voted for AB and his mates again.

Southsiders need more than 1 Fiona Carrick next time.

What a load of crock. I heard Maria Patterson on the radio and she danced round the subject and avoided the subject. It’s an awful situation – John Raut et al walked away with millions, Geocon got their towers, ACT government got their rates, the only losers were Woden residents. It would never have happened with Dickson pool as Andrew Barr lives nearby so will protect community assets in order to keep his own house price high.

The feasibility study around a pool in Edison Park (which has miraculously appeared from nowhere) will take years to write and show that no pool is necessary.

An outdoor 50m pool in Woden is needed. The Geocon option is not going to cut it. Woden needs more certainty than another study

Sounds like the Government is gaslighting us here. ‘Considering’ is code for inaction and 5 years after the Govt’s favourite developer is done no one will notice the loss of a former public asset lost to the community forever.

The Phillip Pool was already owned by the ACT Government until he (then planning minister) ‘dispite being told not to by the WVCC and ACT Figure Skating’ , granted a 99 yr lease to the then lessee Glencora Pty Ltd in 2008.
Just a year later the private Oasis Deakin closed the indoor 50m pool because of poor maintenance . Then then planning authority said there would be 2 x 25m pools . One for learn to swim the other for lap swimmers. That never eventuated. Glencora Pty Ltd did noting at Phillip to upgrade the site.
Now Woden has to have an indoor 25m pool inside an apartment building because ACT Gov. would rather sell off all the land than build appropiate Indoor sporting and aquatic facilities in loactions where people live and easily serviced by Public transport.
We’ve already had several feasibity studies, even a recent so called ‘sports and recreation needs analysis’ which recomended that the Phillip Pool site doesn’t need to keep the 50m pool. No such Needs analysis was ever produced by ACT Sports and Recreation but the change was recommendeed to the draft territory plan. Just a month or so before Geocon bought the site.
What now we may still get a 50 pool at some time in the future ? before or after Light Rail?

Oh my Mr Barr just how many more pimples can grow on your tongue, pity all this never came out prior to the election.

“… so whether the south side may need an outdoor pool is something that we will look at.”

Only a true disciple could believe this, while blissfully forgetting all the previous broken promises.
