Canberra overpasses to get screened

The Canberra Times reports that unbeknownst to us there has been a spate of rocks thrown onto roads from overpasses and now $2.4 million must be spent installing ugly screens to cage the animals in.

They’ve had these in NSW for years and yet rocks still seem to get onto roads and cars there.

Kids that throw rocks off overpasses need to spend some time in the clink. It’s a deliberate, malicious action with a predictable outcome.

I disagree!!

Kids who throw rocks off overpasses should be thrown off overpasses, preferably into the path of a large truck

LOL.

I still cannot imagine why these cretins would think it is a good idea. Even as kids, you would know the danger that this action would actually kill someone.

This will just challenge the rock throwers to get around them. cctv would be a better option surely!

Never seen West Side Story ant? Read any shakespeare? Chaucer? Tacitus? Plato?

I’m waiting for them to come out on DVD.

all this “no punishment” crap is leading exactly where we all thought it would. Kids are not equipped to deal with the real world, that’s why others are charged with raising them. Now we see how growing up without consequences is resulting in increasing numbers of kids who do things like this.

Which of us growing up in the 70s or before would have done something like this? Now we have to spend public money and uglify our streetscape, because of these criminals.

Actually all a lot of them need is a really good smack in the mouth. Knock a bit of reality back into them.

To be honest not enough people nowadays who deserve a smack in the mouth get one. I think the world would be a more pleasant place if people occasionally necessarily got knocked into their place

+1

Agreed.

… put them in the clink, and let their parents join them for a spell. This crime is increasing, while responsible parenting is decreasing. It’s time irresponsible parents were reminded that having children doesn’t mean your input ends with collecting the baby bonus.

Don’t you love the people who want more many police on the roads, then complain if they get booked that it is just “revenue raising”.

Removing a shopping trolley from the parking lot of a supermarket is theft in most countries. Strange something like this isn’t done here.

Just another distraction.

“Harold is that supposed to be a Acacia pycnantha or a longifolia”

That’s when they hit the shopping trolleys.

One or two of these kids/young adults locked up in appropriate detention centres should scare the rest of them straight.

Just like they all take notice when one of their own kills themselves or others by irresponsible drivng, and all take heed and drive perfectly afterwards.

Surely an attempted murder charge could stick in many rock throwing situations? One or two of these kids/young adults locked up in appropriate detention centres should scare the rest of them straight.

Better yet castrate the little darlings and remove them from the gene pool before they can reproduce and proliferate by knocking up their 14 year old girlfriends.

Cut their arms off first.

Of course… rather than screens, bumping up the police presence on ACT roads by 10-20 times the amount we have at the moment would mean that these idiots are more likely to be caught.

And in the ACT that would mean 2 slaps on the wrist and and “don’t be so naughty” from the judge …

I am not sure about at the moment. But a few weeks back all these barriers were on the ACTPLA website for Development Application Comments.

Why do that when GovCo can make money by requiring all rocks to display registration plates, then install automated rock cameras at each bridge.

perhaps they realised that lying on the road would be a very short and messy protest?

at least it isn’t like some of the things i did for entertainment when i was younger… (shudder)

Pfft, kids these days have moved off throwing rocks from the overpasses to lining up rows of shopping trolleys across the lanes of the Parkway at 2am in the morning.

Discovering those while doing 100kph was fun.

Serious? That’s pretty full on. And utterly stupid of those kids. Wow. Slightly confused as to why I’m surprised about it though.

It’s about time shopping trolleys were registered and made to pay CTP

The shopping trolleys were a protest, they want designated “trolley lanes” on our roads.

The plans for these have been on the ACTPLA website for a month.

deye: The most dangerous rocks and blocks of concrete have been too big to throw – just dropped.

With or without Safe-T-Cams?

so they can’t just aim higher when throwing ?

guess we won’t be looking over the side of the bridge when driving anymore, eventually we’ll probably be driving through a corridor of walls all the time.

Even I don’t know if I’m being serious or not.

that’s ‘watermarked’

I guess it was ‘unbeknownst’ to us because police don’t want to be giving delinquent minds any new ideas.

Screens can be ugly, but I like what they’ve done with the screens on the overpasses heading towards Sydney, with what I think are banksia flowers ‘waterwarked’ on them. Done right screens may not be so bad, the necessary evil that they are.
