A few months ago a man was arrested in Sweden for the murder of his Canberran-raised wife you may or may not remember this because by some oversight, RA failed to cover the story). The dismembered body of 38-year-old Nina Peltonen was found in a frozen lake near Stockholm in March.
On Saturday the Canberra Times ran a story with some of the details emerging from the trial of Janne Tapio Tuomela, Ms Peltonen’s husband and the father of her two sons. It appears that Mr Tuomela took his boys shopping, after allegedly beating his wife over the head with a frying pan and stabbing her, for the electric saw, plastic bags and washing liquid which he used in disposing of the body.
He also seems to have been at a loss in planning this disposal, and turned to the internet for help.
Police found evidence that Tuomela was searching the Internet for terms including “murdered his wife”, drinking Jack Daniels and cola while Ms Peltonen slept in a nearby room.
According to Swedish tabloid Expressen, neighbours reported hearing “heartbreaking cries from a woman” about 4am on March 11.
Just 15 minutes later, Tuomela entered the terms “blood stains” and “fabric cleaning” into Google, according to police evidence.
He allegedly told police that he cleared up the blood and put his partner’s body on the balcony.
On March 12, Tuomela’s Internet searches allegedly included “woman murder without body”, “dismembering” and “body in hole in ice”.
And the lesson from all this? If you’re going to murder your partner, be sure to do the research well in advance. And preferably on a public computer.
